White Wall Cinema: STAND BY ME – outdoor screening

In tribute to the late Rob Reiner, we’re proud to present a special outdoor screening of one of the most beloved and enduring films of the 1980s, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Set in the fictional Oregon town of Castle Rock in the summer of 1959 (a location that would become synonymous with King’s work) Stand By Me follows four young friends who set out on a journey to find the body of a local teenager after hearing he has been accidentally killed. Along the way, their late-summer adventure becomes a poignant exploration of friendship, growing up, and the fleeting nature of childhood. Lyrical, funny and deeply moving, the film beautifully captures the universal power of youthful bonds. The Times called it “one of the loveliest and most devastating films ever made about the loss of childhood”, while Rolling Stone described it as “the rare movie that necessarily gets better with time.”

Featuring a remarkable young cast, including Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho), Corey Feldman (Gremlins, The Goonies), Jerry O’Connell (Jerry Maguire) and Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys), Stand By Me, named after the iconic Ben E. King song, is a masterclass in understated, truthful storytelling. Warm, nostalgic and quietly profound, it remains as emotionally resonant today as it was four decades ago.

*This event is a screening in the outdoor garden space at our usual venue of Wagner Hall, please feel free to bring cushions or blankets to sit on but please no chairs or very large cushions etc. (Limited chair seats are available for those who may experience difficulty sitting on the floor of the garden, these will be located to the rear of the garden so as not to obscure other patrons view. Please e-mail us at info@whitewallcinema.co.uk immediately after purchasing your tickets if you require one of these for mobility reasons so we can reserve you one for you.

Doors open at 6.45pm when the bar will be open and music from the era the film is set in (1959) will be playing in the garden, the screening will then take place at sunset in the garden, please do dress appropriately for post sunset viewing even though it is August. Last admission will be 7.45pm after which time the doors will be closed. The screening will go ahead regardless of weather; however if there is a significant risk of rain or disruptive winds the screening will happen inside for safety/comfort reasons.

​No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence.
