One of cinema’s foremost documentarians D.A. Pennebaker (responsible for iconic docs such as Bob Dylan’s Don’t Look Back, Stephen Sondheim’s Original Cast Album: Company, and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars) brings us this iconic pre-Woodstock film about the event that ushered in the Summer of Love.
On a June weekend in 1967 Pennebaker captured Monterey Pop, in what Dennis Hopper would term ‘…a perfect experience. To many of us, it was the first and last’. Perhaps THE formative vent of the era, it saw icons like Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar performing at the peak of their powers plus a number of extraordinary career making performances from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding.
This beautifully restored version of this effusive film from one of cinema’s greatest documentarians captures the sight and sounds of the festival and its myriad of free spirited attendees as well as immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend smashing his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his, Mama Cass watching Janis Joplin’s performance in awe. It is the quintessential document of one of pop culture’s most vibrant eras, made all the more beautiful when experienced under the stars in the open air surroundings of the garden. With a little imagination it might even feel like you are really there, (but imagination only please, don’t attempt to drop acid).

This event is a screening in the outdoor garden space at our usual venue of Wagner Hall, please feel free to bring cushions or blankets to sit on but please no chairs or very large cushions etc. (Limited chair seats are available for those who may experience difficulty sitting on the floor of the garden, please select your ticket accordingly).
Doors open at 7.15pm when the bar will be open and 60s music playing in the garden, the screening will then take place at sunset in the garden, please do dress appropriately for post sunset viewing even though it is June! Last admission will be 8.30pm after which time the doors will be closed. The screening will go ahead regardless of weather; however if there is a significant risk of rain or disruptive winds the screening will happen inside for safety reasons.
