The film is both a brilliant coming of age tale as well as a landmark study of those who are essentially living through wartime. Cuba Gooding Jr, Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube, Angela Bassett and more star in this definitive classic that tackles race, relationships and gang tensions in what is a breathtakingly assured debut film by the then 23 year old John Singleton earning him an Oscar nomination for best director (the youngest ever person to be nominated for the award, and indeed also the first black person to be nominated as best director).
