Based on a story by the great Jacques Tati, the director of Bellville Rendevous / The Triplets of Bellville, Sylvain Chomet provides and exquisite follow up to his much-loved tale of a Tour De France racer. This time he focuses on an ageing magician who finds himself in a world more interested in rock stars than in illusionists, who befriends an innocent young girl in a tender tale of friendship, a voyage of discovery that makes room for the human capacity for wonder, even in an a largely indifferent world. This time set in London and Edinburgh, Chomet’s world is nothing short of a miracle of animation. So beautifully rendered is the environment and the tale of its protagonists The Illusionist is capable of making even the most jaded viewers dewy eyed at its sublime artistry and melancholy but uplifting story. Filled with gentle humour, clever set pieces, and human connection, it is in essence a cinematic act of love from a father to a daughter and a highly recommended must see on a big screen, in order to savour the details of what is one of the great animations of the last several decades.
