Quite clearly the biggest single inspiration for the Nicolas Winding Refn/Ryan Gosling film ‘Drive’,  The Driver is the product of cult film director Walter Hill (also responsible for The Warriors, 48hrs and more) who crafts a taught pulp noir thriller about a getaway driver (Ryan O’Neal), his crooked cop nemesis (Bruce Dern) and the gambler who chooses to protect him (Isabelle Adjani). Cool as ice, filled with red hot stunt driving, with style to burn, Shaun of The Dead/Last Night In Soho director Edgar Wright (whose own Baby Driver film was also influenced by this cult classic) called The Driver ‘A diamond-tight minimalist masterclass’.
