White Wall Cinema: WHITE NIGHTS
40TH ANNIVERSARY
October 26 @ 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm

A totally unexpected approach to the cold war thriller, White Nights pirouettes into an entirely different category by utilising the electrifying pairing of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines—two of the greatest dancers of the 20th century, each with wildly different styles, lighting up the screen together in a film that fuses political tension with jaw-dropping artistry.
Whether you’re a fan of 80s pop culture, Cold War thrillers, or simply want to see two of the greatest performers of all time at the peak of their powers, join us as the nights begin to draw in—and, in fact, on the very day the clocks go back (so don’t forget to adjust your watch!)— to delve into this unexpected piece of 80s ephemera named after a Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) phenomenon: the ‘White Nights’—those magical, and somewhat eerie summer days when the sun never fully sets…
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, White Nights comes from director Taylor Hackford director of An Officer and a Gentleman, The Devil’s Advocate, Ray). This Cold War thriller follows Nikolai (Mikhail Baryshnikov), a world-famous Russian-American ballet dancer whose plane makes an emergency landing in Siberia. Recognised as a defector, he’s taken into custody by Soviet authorities and placed under house arrest.
While White Nights works as a enjoyably gripping 1980s Cold War thriller, what truly sets it apart is its remarkable pairing of two dance legends: Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Their talents are showcased in White Nights to breathtaking effect, with choreography by the legendary Twyla Tharp. Every dance sequence is a visual and emotional feast—electrifying, athletic, and deeply expressive. White Nights is can’t miss Sunday evening treat.
