SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: Space\, space\, baby
DESCRIPTION:How the Human Mind has Shaped Our Place Among the Stars\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis month we’re delighted to welcome back Tahani Baldwin from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. \n\n\n\nScientists have often described the human brain as the most complex object in the universe. With approximately 86 billion neurons and trillions of synaptic connections\, the brain has shaped how we perceive the world around us and fuelled our curiosity about what lies beyond it. From looking up at the night sky to walking on the Moon\, our exploration of space is as much a story of the human mind as it is one of rockets\, engineering\, and technology. In this talk\, Tahani Baldwin will explore the psychology and neuroscience behind our drive to venture into the unknown\, and what happens to the mind when we get there. \n\n\n\nTahani Baldwin is a PhD candidate in Neuroscience at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Her work investigates the influence of digital interventions and psychophysiology to promote behavioural change within industrial settings. A keen space enthusiast\, Tahani has applied her knowledge of human behaviour to the study and practice of space exploration. Her master’s research investigated personality and stress during Martian virtual reality simulations\, during which she served as Chairperson of the University of Birmingham Astronomical Society\, and more recently acted as Psychological Officer for Asclepios VI\, a lunar analogue mission in the Swiss Alps. When she’s not researching\, you can find her scuba diving off the beaches of Shoreham (weather-dependent)\, reading any sci-fi novel she can find\, and proudly hosting for Brighton Astro. \n\n\n\nIf you sign up via meetup but can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place. Please only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring the event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. Brighton Astro is inclusive and welcomes everybody. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Running on Empty:
DESCRIPTION:Anxious parents\, confident children?\n\n\n\nProf Sam Cartwright-Hatton\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7PM | SPEAKER 7.30PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSam Cartwright-Hatton is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Sussex. Her research focuses on understanding and preventing anxiety disorders and other mental health problems in children\, particularly the role that parents can play in shaping children’s emotional development. \n\n\n\n\n7:00pm Doors open\, bar opens\n\n\n\n7:30pm Talk starts\n\n\n\n8:15pm approx Short break followed by Q+A\n\n\n\n9:00pm Event ends\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning in the Family: Can We Help Anxious Parents to Raise Confident Children? \n\n\n\nWhy do mental health problems run in families? And\, more importantly\, can we do anything to stop this? We know that children of parents who have anxiety disorders are at increased risk of developing mental health problems themselves. But what can we actually do about it? \n\n\n\nIn this session\, Prof. Sam Cartwright-Hatton will explore the fascinating science of how anxiety influences the way parents think\, feel and behave\, and how this might affect the way they respond to their children. \n\n\n\nShe will share some surprising findings from her research into helping anxious parents raise confident children\, and ask whether changing the way we parent could help break the cycle of anxiety from one generation to the next. \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: Southland Tales
DESCRIPTION:THE CANNES CUT | 2K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n** See Southland Tales in conjunction with Richard Kelly’s debut film Donnie Darko which is screening on Thursday October 29th by getting the discounted Richard Kelly Double Ticket. For more on Donnie Darko go HERE ** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Richard Kelly’s follow-up to his debut feature Donnie Darko is the entirely remarkable but largely misunderstood Southland Tales. A response to the post-9/11 world and its new absurd political realities\, this sprawling Los Angeles near-future dystopian black comedy thriller was screened at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival to a disastrous reception. In a panic\, the film was hastily re-edited\, losing much of its core\, and released to the public\, only to be promptly dismissed. \n\n\n\nThe story\, set in 2008\, sees the United States standing on the brink of social\, economic\, and environmental disaster\, in the midst of a Fourth of July heatwave weekend. Action movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) finds himself suffering from amnesia as his life intertwines with pornstar Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar)\, who is developing her own reality TV show tackling the big subjects of terrorism\, crime\, poverty\, and\, yes\, teen horniness. Added to this mix is LAPD officer Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott)\, whose identity seems to have been split in two. \n\n\n\nA rip-roaring hybrid of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick sensibilities\, with an almost hypnotic mix of grandeur\, etherealness\, and downright absurdist\, Republican Party-fuelled phantasmagoria. Miss the Cannes Cut at your peril. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 160 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.50pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.20pm. There will usually be no admittance from 20 minutes after the films stated start time. No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. SUMMARY:Ladylike
DESCRIPTION:The Brighton based quartet – Georgia Butler (vocals\, guitar)\, Spencer Withey (vocals\, guitar\, synth)\, James Ely (drums)\, and Archie Sagers (six-string bass) serve their folk rare: raw and pastoral\, but with a side of textural\, atmospheric builds directly wired into the tensions of the modern world. It’s a formula that has gained them slots at Green Man; Left Of The Dial; The Great Escape; and Dot To Dot\, plus support slots with Ugly\, Mary in the Junkyard and Lime Garden. Early champions at radio and press include KEXP\, BBC 6 Music\, Apple 1\, Radio X\, DIY\, So Young\, and Rough Trade. \n\n\n\nThe band’s forthcoming debut EP was recorded with producer Ali Chant (Aldous Harding\, Perfume Genius\, PJ Harvey). It captures the quiet urgency that has always been Ladylike’s hallmark. Across four tracks\, they explore cycles renewal\, and the beauty of persistence\, finding poetry in English idioms and the banality of the mundane. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nUnder 16s must be accompanied by an adult.\n\n\n\nUnreserved seating.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed.
