SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema Presents: ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE
DESCRIPTION:The great Ellen Burstyn hand-picked Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas\, Shutter Island) to direct this brilliant and sensitive tale of Alice\, a woman desperately trying to find her independence at age 35 with a young precocious son in tow. Thrust into the world of the mid 1970’s American southwest to fend for herself\, Alice is determined to make a better life for herself despite the litany of (mostly male) obstacles standing in the way of her second chance. Straight after making Mean Streets\, and right before Taxi Driver\, Scorsese uses this unique moment in his career to carefully help Burstyn (then famous for her roles in The Last Picture Show and The Exorcist) take the lead in creating a performance that noted critic Vincent Canby of the New York Times defined as ‘appealing\, tough\, intelligent\, funny\, and bereft\, all at approximately the same moment’ and earned Burstyn a Best Actress Oscar win. One of the few truly great female centred movies to come out of the defining era of 70s American cinema\, Alice Doesn’t Live Her Anymore is one of the most rewarding\, surprising and overlooked films by one of the world’s all-time great directors. \n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm* \n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm* \n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 112 mins \n\n\n\nCERT: 15 \n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema Presents: BOYZ N THE HOOD
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off our new ‘Black Cinema Goes Boom’ programming strand focusing on the explosion of early ‘90s popular black cinema is John Singleton’s tale of three childhood friends\, Darrin\, Tre and Ricky\, living in a hotbed of gang violence in early 90s South Central L.A. The film is both a brilliant coming of age tale as well as a landmark study of those who are essentially living through wartime. Cuba Gooding Jr\, Laurence Fishburne\, Ice Cube\, Angela Bassett and more star in this definitive classic that tackles race\, relationships and gang tensions in what is a breathtakingly assured debut film by the then 23 year old John Singleton earning him an Oscar nomination for best director (the youngest ever person to be nominated for the award\, and indeed also the first black person to be nominated as best director). Emotive\, humurous\, powerful and still highly relevant\, Boyz N The Hood still stands as one of the keystones of black American cinema \n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm* \n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7pm* \n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 112 mins \n\n\n\nCERT: 15 \n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema Presents: THE FORGIVEN
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps lesser known than his younger brother Martin McDonagh (director of In Bruges\, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri\, and The Banshees of Inisherin) John Michael McDonagh makes films that are equally fascinating and no less brilliant. His latest work The Forgiven can be said to be part of the current wave of extreme biting satires of the wealthy kicked off by Parasite\, and followed by the likes of Triangle Of Sadness\, The White Lotus\, The Menu and more. Ralph Fiennes\, Jessica Chastain (both outrageously excellent here) find themselves at the centre of a nasty incident on the way to a lavish party in the Moroccan desert hosted by two Londoners (Matt Smith and Caleb Landry Jones) for their vacuous and well heeled friends. What follows is a contemplative thriller stuffed with social commentary with a deliciously sardonic bent. \n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm* \n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm* \n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 117 mins \n\n\n\nCERT: 18 \n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema Presents: THE SWIMMER(1968)
DESCRIPTION: + OPTIONAL POST FILM DISCUSSION  GROUP  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhite Wall Cinema’s discussion group returns! Join us for a screening of this restored celebrated 60s classic with an optional chance to stay on and discuss the film in a relaxed informal post film group chat. Contribute or just listen in\, it’s a fun and interesting way to understand the myriad meanings of this unique piece of cinema. \n\n\n\nPerhaps the most subversive film ever released by a major studio\, Burt Lancaster stars as Ned Merril\, a well off ad exec who one day notices a line of swimming pools running across the affluent stretch of Connecticut he calls home\, leading all the way to his house. Seemingly on a whim Ned decides to swim home across them\, leading to a series of unusual encounters with his neighbours. A highly surrealist look at the American Dream\, the film is a David Lynch-like exploration of material wealth\, morality\, and the nightmarish truth behind the luxury playground of suburbia. Ahead of its time and still hauntingly powerful\, currently being reappraised in the wider cinematic discourse\, this one is ripe for a fascinating post film discussion.  \n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.25pm* \n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.55pm* \n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 117 mins \n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 15s Must Be Accompanied by an Adult) \n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets
