DESCRIPTION:After 11 years of bringing you interesting\, unexpected\, unusual\, overlooked and fun cinema\, we thought it was time to celebrate with a get-together. \n\n\n\nWith weekly screening events now happening at WWC\, we’ve decided to create a space for film lovers of all kinds to informally connect\, meet new people\, share what you love about film\, learn about film and chat about cinema’s latest hot topics\, all in a totally pressure free and relaxed environment. \n\n\n\nEach event will offer a chance to grab a drink and mingle with fellow cinephiles\, as well as enjoy a series of short presentations from WWC. These could include short films\, exclusive previews\, or spotlighting creatives such as actors or directors\, highlighting a genre\, or even bringing you films about cinema itself\, as well as the process behind the camera.  \n\n\n\nOne of our key aims has always been to build a community around a shared love of film. If this first event is a success\, we hope to make it a regular fixture. To celebrate the night ‘coming of age’ White Wall Cinema are collaborating with 1985 for a season of films called ‘Sex in the 80s’ which continues this May with forgotten 80s classic ‘Heartbreakers’.  \n\n\n\nVery obviously the key influence on Challengers (Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 ménage à trois tennis drama starring Zendaya\, Mike Faist\, and Josh O’Connor)\, this overlooked\, underseen\, tender and sexy buddy movie about two highly competitive male friends (on the racquetball court and off)\, both chronically unsuccessful in love\, is a true forgotten gem. Intelligent framing and lush\, sensual ’80s atmospherics blend with a raw\, confessional style to create something of a mini-masterpiece. \n\n\n\nBased on the personal experiences of director Bobby Roth\, Heartbreakers approaches its subject in the style of a European relationship drama while retaining all the textures of mid-’80s Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 7.40PM SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by multi–Academy Award\, Palme d’Or\, and Golden Globe–nominated filmmaker Bruce Beresford\, and based on an original screenplay by Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Horton Foote\, (who won Oscars both for this script and for his 1962 classic screen adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird) this understated and deeply affecting film stands as an elegantly simple triumph. It also marks the only time Robert Duvall won an Academy Award\, taking home Best Actor at the 56th Oscars for this role. \n\n\n\nThe story is so compelling that it was\, in essence\, revisited in reverse with Crazy Heart\, starring Jeff Bridges (who won an Oscar for his role\, Duvall himself also appeared in the film). Where the 2009 film charts a descent into alcoholism\, this earlier 1983 made tale offers a path toward redemption. Mac Sledge\, a once-prominent country singer with a troubled past\, awakens after a night of heavy drinking on the floor of a roadside motel and resolves to change his life. What unfolds is a gentle\, reflective portrait of a man attempting to rebuild himself\, forming a bond with a young widow and her son\, reconnecting with his estranged daughter\, and confronting the lingering echoes of his former fame.  \n\n\n\nDuvall’s deft\, deeply felt performance transforms what could have been an overly sentimental narrative into a nuanced character study with lasting emotional resonance. The film’s authentic richly drawn characters\, and natural chemistry of the cast\, combined with a subtle touch of romance and a quietly inspirational\, bittersweet tone\, elevate this elegantly simple work.
