DESCRIPTION:Dr Robert Massey (Royal Astronomical Society)\, and Dr Alexandra Loske (Royal Pavilion\, Brighton)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHumans have been fascinated with our nearest heavenly body\, the Earth’s Moon\, since prehistoric times. It has now been more than 50 years since we set foot on the Moon during the Apollo space missions.\n\n\n\nIn this lecture astronomer Dr Robert Massey (Royal Astronomical Society) and art historian and curator Dr Alexandra Loske (Royal Pavilion\, Brighton) and will show how our obsession with the Moon has manifested itself in the visual arts\, from earliest ritualistic drawings to scientific observation\, Romantic symbolism\, silent movies\, and space race propaganda. \n\n\n\nIn 2019 Alexandra and Robert co-authored a book on the subject: Moon – Art\, Science\, Culture\, which has been translated into Spanish and Chinese. In 2019 Alexandra edited an anthology on recent creative writing on the Moon: Pale Fire – New Writing on the Moon. Most recently\, she contributed to chapters to a major new book on the Moon: Lunar: A History of the Moon in Myths\, Maps + Matter (Thames & Hudson and University of Chicago Press). Robert is the deputy director of the Royal Astronomical Society. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. \n\n\n\nPlease note that the venue has a bar. \n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nIf you can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place

Our natural impulse to share interesting new information and experiences with others is a cornerstone of human society. \n\n\n\nMost people interested in astronomy will have pointed out stars and planets to family or friends\, but the opportunities go far beyond this. There are a wide range of organisations and projects across the UK (and beyond) that offer different ways to share your interest\, with the chance to make a real and positive impact both on individuals and society as a whole. \n\n\n\nDr Jenny Shipway is a professional science communicator with a background in science centres and planetariums. She now works as a consultant\, writer\, and project manager. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Why snails might hold some answers to age-related memory loss…
DESCRIPTION:With Prof Mark Yeoman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nMolluscs have been routinely used to study the mechanisms by which nerve cells communicate. Indeed\, our understanding of how the electrical signals in neurons are generated and the fundamental mechanisms of learning and memory formation were first discovered in this simple model system. Like many animals\, snails age and when they age their ability to learn and remember is impaired. This talk will introduce you to the humble mollusc\, explain why it has gained success as a model system for studying age-related changes in CNS function and how experiments designed to reverse age-related memory impairments may point towards novel treatments to delay cognitive decline in older people. \n\n\n\nMark Yeoman is Professor of Neuropharmacology at Brighton University and Director of the Centre for Lifelong Health. The focus of his research is to understand the causes and consequences of central nervous system ageing. He obtained his degree in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Southampton before studying for a PhD at the University of Aberdeen in hyperbaric medicine. He then moved to the University of Sussex where he was introduced to the pond snails as a model system for studying neurobiology. In 1998 he was appointed as a senior lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Brighton and started to use the pond snail to understand how ageing affected the nervous system. His current research explores how age-related changes in nervous system lipid composition affects neural function. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:00pm\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated!

SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: The Second-Life of Planetary Systems
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\n\n\nDefying the notion of the silent graveyard\, planetary systems refuse to die quietly. Instead\, a significant fraction show one or more signs of dynamical reanimation\, with strong indications of general mayhem during the last stages of stellar evolution. The lecture will give a brief tour of these evolved and active planetary systems\, which provide major insights into rocky planetary bodies in particular.\n\n\n\nThese descendants of intermediate-mass stars reveal characteristics of their former planetary systems in ways unattainable by conventional methods using main-sequence stars. In particular\, the metal pollution observed in white dwarf stars reveals the bulk chemistry of entire planetesimals or planetary fragments\, including compelling evidence for Earth-like chemistry\, planetary differentiation\, and believe it or not – water. This talk will cover some of the highlights of the active planetary graveyard\, including variability and transient behaviour. \n\n\n\nJay Farihi hails from Southern California\, where he did his PhD at UCLA searching for substellar companions to white dwarf stars using infrared imaging. He held a postdoctoral position at Gemini Observatory on the big island of Hawaii\, and was a senior fellow at the Institute for Astronomy in Cambridge. He was awarded an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship in 2012 and joined the faculty of UCL in 2013\, where he is now professor. He is best known for his role in establishing the field of planetary systems orbiting white dwarfs\, especially using infrared observations to establish the presence and nature of their planetesimal debris disks\, and how these link to the heavy element pollution seen in their atmospheres. He enjoys hardcore punk and metal\, is a whisky fanatic\, loves to travel\, and has spent over 150 nights on summits pursuing his own research programs. \n\n\n\nIf you sign up via meetup but can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place. \n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nWagner Hall is on on Regency Road\, Brighton.Attendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: The Quantum Universe
DESCRIPTION:With Prof Stephen Wilkins\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nQuantum physics is a fundamental theory that describes the behaviour of nature at and below the scale of atoms. Celebrating 100 years since initial developments\, the United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. As part of these celebrations I will introduce how quantum physics is essential to our understanding of the Cosmos\, focussing on two examples.First\, the process of nuclear fusion is responsible for the majority energy generation in stars; however the temperatures in stellar interiors are too low for this to happen “classically”. However\, the phenomenon of quantum tunnelling enables atomic nuclei to fuse even if they don’t have the required energies.Second\, our Universe is replete with structures in the form of planets\, stars\, galaxies and clusters. These structures are thought to caused by amplification by the process of inflation of minuscule quantum fluctuations present in the very early Universe. \n\n\n\nStephen Wilkins is a Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex. Stephen obtained his Masters in Physics from the University of Durham before receiving his PhD from the University of Cambridge. Stephen then worked as a research fellow at the University of Oxford before joining the faculty at Sussex in 2013.Stephen’s main research focuses on understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies\, particularly the first stages in the distant early Universe. To do this Stephen combines observations from telescopes including Webb and Hubble with supercomputer simulations. Outside his research Stephen is also a keen advocate of public understanding of science. Highlights include his leadership of three exhibits at the prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and dozens of talks. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:00pm\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Is a 4 day week good for you & your business?
DESCRIPTION:With Dr Charlotte Rae\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nIn a 4 day working week\, full-time employees reduce their time at work to 4 days with no loss of salary. Media reports have suggested this can enhance both staff wellbeing\, and performance at work. But what really happens behind closed doors and beyond the media headlines? We’ve been studying employers in Sussex and around the UK who made the switch\, to find out the impacts that it had on their staff\, and on the business. From mental health to productivity\, and sleep to brain function\, we’ve been assessing how a 4 day working week transforms life at work and beyond. We’ll share our latest findings from our Sussex 4 Day Week trial. We’ll also explore how staff manage to get more done in less time\, by using psychological tips and tricks to increase efficiency at work. \n\n\n\nDr Charlotte Rae is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Sussex. Her research explores the biology of wellbeing and work\, and particularly the interaction of our working hours with mental and physical health. She founded the Sussex 4 Day Week programme to study the effects of a 4 day week\, and to use these research insights to help employers who want to give a shorter working week a try. Her research is funded by a £1.6million UK Research Council grant that studies how our brain health interacts with our work performance. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:15pm\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: The teen brain - don't be afraid
DESCRIPTION:With Dr Liat Levita\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAre adolescents really just thrill-seekers who struggle to learn from negative outcomes? The answer\, as we will talk about\, is a big no. I will share some exciting research from my lab\, using insights from EEG and behavioural tasks to challenge common misconceptions about teens. We will explore what these findings reveal about brain plasticity\, risk-taking\, and mental health\, and why adolescence—while for most is an age full of opportunity—can also be a time of increased vulnerability. This will be an informal and interactive talk\, so feel free to jump in with any questions\, thoughts\, or anything that fascinates you about the teenage brain! \n\n\n\nDr Liat Levita is the head of the Developmental Affective Neuroscience Lab and a Reader in Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Sussex. Her research takes a translational approach to understanding adolescence—a period of both immense opportunity and heightened vulnerability. By examining individual developmental trajectories from childhood through adulthood\, she investigates both normative and non-normative development\, with a focus on the impact of early life stress on well-being. She also studies the emergence of mental health pathologies\, using a combination of brain imaging and psychophysiological methods (e.g.\, heart rate). She has held academic positions at the Universities of York\, Sheffield\, and Sussex\, following postdoctoral research at Cornell\, Columbia\, and Emory Universities. She earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge and BSc in Neuroscience from the University of St Andrews. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:15pm\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. SUMMARY:Brighton Astro - Mercury 13: The Pioneering Women Who Defied the Space Race and Fought for Their Place Among the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tahani BaldwinUniversity of Sussex\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the height of the Space Race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union\, a little-known yet revolutionary program dared to defy the norms of the 1960s. Spearheaded by visionary aerospace physician Dr. William Randolph Lovelace ll\, this groundbreaking initiative sought to answer one bold question: Could women endure the physical and psychological demands of spaceflight? The answer came from thirteen extraordinary women – accomplished pilots who challenged societal expectations and excelled under gruelling tests\, often surpassing their male counterparts. Though the program was ultimately discontinued\, their resilience in the face of entrenched prejudices became a powerful and enduring symbol of progress and possibility. This Women’s History Month\, we honour these trailblazing women\, whose courage and determination not only shaped the history of human spaceflight\, but also inspired generations of explorers to reach for the stars. \n\n\n\nTahani Baldwin\, GMBPsS\, is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School\, with a research focus on digital interventions and behavioural change. She graduated with honours in Psychology from Aston University in 2022 and went on to complete her Master’s degree in Psychology at the University of Birmingham. Tahani’s passion for space exploration emerged during her postgraduate studies. As Chairperson of the University of Birmingham Astronomical Society\, she led initiatives to promote engagement with astronomy and space research. For her master’s thesis\, she explored the role of personality traits in stress adaptation within a simulated Martian environment. An avid space enthusiast and advocate for interdisciplinary research\, Tahani is dedicated to advancing our understanding of human behaviour in extraterrestrial contexts\, and deepening our knowledge of humanity’s place in the cosmos. SUMMARY:Brighton Astro - Exploring the end of the dark ages
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Stephen WilkinsUniversity of Sussex\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nIn our current understanding\, our Universe emerged from an incredibly hot\, dense state roughly 14 billion years ago. While initially incredibly hot and full of light as the Universe expanded it cooled\, eventually becoming dark\, entering a period known as the “cosmological dark ages”. During this period dark matter and gas\, attracted by the force of gravity\, developed into structures\, eventually leading to the formation of the first stars and galaxies\, lighting up the Universe. This earliest period of galaxy formation is now accessible thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb). Webb not only allows us to identify examples of early galaxies but learn about their detailed physical properties. Webb has already thrown up surprising results including many more super-massive black holes in the early Universe than expected. \n\n\n\nStephen Wilkins is a Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex. Stephen obtained his Masters in Physics from the University of Durham before receiving his PhD from the University of Cambridge. Stephen then worked as a research fellow at the University of Oxford before joining the faculty at Sussex in 2013. Stephen’s main research focuses on understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies\, particularly the first stages in the distant early Universe. Outside his research Stephen is also a keen advocate of public understanding of science. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique - The Neanderthal People of the English Channel: Adaptations and Extinctions
DESCRIPTION:With Dr Matt Pope\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nLa Manche is the name we give to the Ice Age landscapes of the English Channel\, southern Britain and northern France. It has a record of early human behaviour which varies from isolated and difficult-to-interpret single artefacts through to rare sites preserving deep and rich accumulations of many thousands of finds. By interpreting these traces\, which include rare human remains\, we are able to tell a story of Neanderthal people from their earliest origins through to their apparent extinction. In this lecture we explore this record looking at Neanderthal culture through the lens of their adaptive success and consider in what ways their interactions with Homo sapiens may have led to their disappearance. \n\n\n\nMatt Pope is an archaeologist based at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. Leading on excavations in Britain and the Channel Islands\, he studies the Ice Age prehistory of northern Europe. His research tries to understand how early human cultures pushed at the limits of their range and how these adaptations underpinned our species success and the current challenges it faces. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Glass fibre composites - a new ‘forever material’?
DESCRIPTION:With Dr Corina Ciocan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the past 80 years\, glass reinforced plastic boats (GRP or composite boats) have become a mainstay of the boating industry while little attention has been given to the consequences of GRP degradation or boat disposal. Recent studies reveal widespread glass fibre pollution in heavily trafficked waterways while research and policy lag behind. With over one million GRP boats reaching the end of their life each year\, disposal and recycling solutions that protect aquatic life and human health are urgently needed. \n\n\n\nA marine biologist\, Corina Ciocan’s expertise is in Ecotoxicology (the impact of environmental stressors on aquatic organisms). She has been a Principal Lecturer at the University of Brighton since 2012; prior to this\, Corina was a full-time Researcher at the University of Sussex\, part of the Aquatic Toxicology group. She is involved in a wide range of national and international research programmes\, with focus on aquatic contamination. She has published scientific articles and books and her studies have been heavily referenced in numerous publications and television programs around the world. She is considered a pioneer in efforts to highlight coastal degradation\, but also the lack of environmental protection legislation. \n\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Waterstones: An Evening With Florence Given
DESCRIPTION:DOORS – 6.15pm\n\n\n\nEVENT – 7.00pm\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing her sold out ‘Girlcrush’ event from last year\, Florence Given returns to Brighton Waterstones to discuss her much anticipated new book\, ‘Women Living Deliciously’. \n\n\n\nIn ‘Women Living Deliciously’\, Florence encourages us to fall in love with our lives and uncover the sense of wonder in ourselves that has been buried by shame\, perfectionism and self-objectification. \n\n\n\nShe believes that for too long we have internalised the belief that our bodies are things to be looked at\, rather than lived in; that it’s embarrassing to fully express ourselves; that we cannot trust the parts of ourselves that are so full of desire. \n\n\n\nThis book will unpack the many barriers women face when trying to access joy so that they can discover the delicious life that’s theirs for the taking. \n\n\n\nPlease note: the Book & Ticket option includes a copy of Women Living Deliciously (RRP. £20.00) which will be available for collection on the night.

SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Monitoring biodiversity along the Sussex coast
DESCRIPTION:With Dr Valentina Scarponi and Alice Clark\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nUp until the late 1980’s\, Sussex Bay harboured dense kelp beds. However\, since then\, 96% of the kelp beds have been lost from the Bay\, resulting in a degraded habitat. It is thought that the kelp was lost as a result of decades of trawling\, increased water temperatures\, sedimentation and pollution. In March 2021\, the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) introduced the Nearshore Trawling Byelaw\, firstly to help the recovery of fish stocks and secondly to allow the kelp to restore itself. The ARK team (Aquatic Research and Knowledge exchange) at the University of Sussex has since been monitoring the biodiversity in Sussex Bay\, using video surveys and environmental DNA\, to understand how the removal of trawling is affecting marine life. \n\n\n\nDr Valentina Scarponi is a lecturer in Ecology and Animal Behaviour at the University of Sussex\, and the project co-lead with Prof Mika Peck. Her expertise includes shark behaviour\, ecophysiology and conservation\, fisheries management\, coral reef monitoring and restoration\, and effects of habitat degradation on marine community composition. \n\n\n\nAlice Clark is a PhD student at the University of Sussex. She has a background in zoology and evolutionary biology. Her PhD research focuses on monitoring biodiversity along the Sussex coast since the implementation of the Nearshore Trawling Byelaw.

SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Living is a Risky Business
DESCRIPTION:With Prof Jennifer Visser-Rogers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are bombarded with numbers and statistics in the media on a daily basis and are expected to use these to make decisions about our day-to-day lives. But what do these numbers really mean? Real life involves risks. From cycling without a helmet\, visiting a country with contagious diseases\, to living near the water. Sometimes your perception of risk is distorted\, making you think that some things are more – or less – risky than is actually the case. And sometimes things happen just by chance\, right? In this talk Jen Visser-Rogers will be taking you through some of the most important concepts in statistics as she looks at extreme weather events\, pharmaceutical drug trials\, risk\, and more. \n\n\n\nProfessor Jennifer Visser-Rogers is an experienced statistical consultant and a popular science communicator and presenter. With a Ph.D. from the University of Warwick and a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Lancaster University\, she has a broad portfolio of achievement\, particularly in the development of clinical trial methodologies. She has an interest in the development and application of novel statistical methodologies\, particularly in clinical trials. Jen can also regularly be found giving conference presentations and talking all things statistics in schools\, theatres and pubs. She can often be heard on the Radio or seen on TV screens. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic\, Jen carried out numerous interviews\, was ITV’s resident COVID-19 statistician\, and was a member of the Royal Statistical Society COVID-19 Task Force. \n\n\n\nThis talk has been arranged in collaboration with the Royal Statistical Society whose annual conference is taking place in Brighton during the first week of September.
