Many years later and now living in New York Nora discovers Hae Sung has been trying to contact her and the two rekindle their friendship online. What follows is an entirely modern romance movie that forgoes the normal clichés and sets about forging an more understated route through its central characters inner lives as Nora (now married to Arthur) must reckon with the larger meaning of her friendship to Hae Sung. Past Lives offers mature meditations on fate\, friendship\, love\, and the large collection of very small choices we all make that combine to create our lives. \n\n\n\nThis film will be followed by an optional post film discussion group! Join us for a screening of this brilliant film with an optional chance to stay on and discuss the film in a relaxed informal post film group chat. Influenced by the French New Wave\, Penn allows burgeoning countercultural attitudes of the era to seep into cinema for the first time in the most fascinating of ways. \n\n\n\nAdapted by Lillian Hellman from the novel and play by Horton Foote (Oscar winner for the To Kill A Mockingbird screenplay) the film explores the tensions in the small town of Tarl\, Texas when Bubber Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison. Town Sheriff\, Calder (Marlon Brando on blistering form) feels he must apprehend Reeves quickly in order to appease local residents on the verge of vigilantism\, all egged on by local oil baron Val Rogers (E.G. Marshall) who wants to protect his son Jake (James Fox) who is sleeping with Reeve’s wife Anna (a brilliant Jane Fonda). The film brilliantly captures the moral excesses of its characters boiling over as it tackles themes of racism\, the sexual revolution\, violence\, class\, and corruption which still plague America to this very day. Sublimely written\, directed and performed\, The Chase is a seminal work which is ripe for rediscovery. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 134 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets URL:https://www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk/event/white-wall-cinema-the-chase/ LOCATION:Wagner Hall CATEGORIES:Cinema ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/webp:https://www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/The-Chase-Poster.webp END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20240313T191500 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20240313T213000 DTSTAMP:20240329T002902 CREATED:20240303T145957Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240303T155813Z UID:2920-1710357300-1710365400@www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Experience Machines: How Our Minds Predict and Shape Reality DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nHuman brains are nature’s own ‘prediction machines’ – evolved organs that are constantly trying to predict flows of sensation\, both from within our own body and from the wider world. This casts perception and feeling as forms of ‘controlled hallucination’ in which raw sensory information delivers experience only relative to our brain’s best predictions. These accounts suggest new ways of understanding both typical and atypical forms of human experience. They also suggest various ways we can ‘hack our own brains’\, pushing back against unhelpful hidden predictions. The upshot should be a new appreciation of both the continuity and the diversity of human experience. \n\n\n\nAndy Clark is Professor of Cognitive Philosophy at the University of Sussex\, UK. Here Scorsese poses the question\, ‘What if the awful date you thought would never end… didn’t end?’ \n\n\n\nWhen Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) has a chance encounter with a mysterious woman (Rosanna Arquette) in a coffee shop he is unwittingly dragged into a bizarre late night adventure in the seemingly inescapable bohemian enclave of 1980s SoHo\, taking in everything from an intimidating underground N.Y. Punk club (on Mohawk night)\, through to a surreal visit to an artist’s residence to collect a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight. Featuring a great cast including Teri Garr (Close Encounters)\, Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek)\, and even Cheech & Chong. This is a research centre investigating the responses of cells to DNA damage and the relationship to cancer and other aspects of human disease. She is interested in how cells deal with problems that occur during replication\, the copying of the DNA\, and the consequences of mis-regulation for genome instability and cancer. Her lab focuses on the Smc5/6 complex and how this coordinates the recovery of replication with repair of DNA damage. \n\n\n\nWhen two baby girls in a Dutch family died suddenly of lung failure paediatricians suspected a genetic cause. This led to an international collaboration between clinicians\, geneticists and other discovery scientists. Together\, we identified the defective gene and predicted it would lead to misfunctioning of the SMC5/6 complex. This is a group of proteins required for accurate copying and repair of our DNA. My lab has a long-term interest in SMC5/6 and we were able to build a picture of what is happening in the patients’ cells. There are now around 5\,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO)\, the region up to 2\,000 km above the ground\, and their deployment is accelerating. 2019 saw the launch of Starlink\, a satellite constellation built and launched by SpaceX\, a system that on its own could soon have more than 30\,000 spacecraft deployed. With other operators we could soon see up to 300\,000 satellites in LEO by the end of this decade. \n\n\n\nThis is nothing less than a step change in our use of space. And like most paradigm shifts\, it will have significant consequences. A key example is how it will affect the science of astronomy and our view of the sky. A brilliantly shot big screen experience that breaks the very idea of cinema down into it’s constituent parts only to piece it back together again to create of the most entertaining and witty movies of it’s type from any era. When coupled with our special visual mix-tape introduction (and companion piece film on Nov. 1st)\, it’s a can’t miss event. \n\n\n\nProgrammed as part of Brighton’s Powell and Pressburger: Dual Delights Season\, we have matched it with a very special companion piece in Michael Powell’s ‘Peeping Tom’ ‘screening Weds. Jen loved Andy. \n\n\n\nAnd he can’t work out why she stopped. \n\n\n\nNow he is. . . \n\n\n\n1. Without a home \n\n\n\n2. Waiting for his stand-up career to take off \n\n\n\n3. Wondering why everyone else around him seems to have grown up while he wasn’t looking \n\n\n\nSet adrift on the sea of heartbreak at a time when everything he thought he knew about women\, and flat-sharing\, and his friendships has transformed beyond recognition\, Andy clings to the idea of solving the puzzle of their broken relationship. Because if he can find the answer to that\, then maybe Jen can find her way back to him. \n\n\n\nAndy still has a lot to learn\, not least his ex-girlfriend’s side of the story. \n\n\n\nDolly Alderton is an award-winning author\, screenwriter and journalist based in London. This twisted tale of a psychopathic serial killer cameraman who films his victims as he murders them is now widely considered to be a highly influential masterpiece that has subsequently been championed by the likes of master director Martin Scorsese and feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey. \n\n\n\nNot only a pre-cursor to the modern slasher movie\, Peeping Tom is also a psychologically sharp thriller that asks difficult and fascinating questions about cinema as a form of voyeurism. Undoubtedly one of the best British movies ever made it is a must see big screen experience when coupled with our special visual mix-tape introduction (and our companion piece film on Nov. 29th). \n\n\n\nProgrammed as part of Brighton’s Powell and Pressburger: Dual Delights Season\, we have matched it with very a special companion piece in Brian DePalma’s ‘Blow Out’\, screening Weds. Funny\, troubling\, romantic and unflinching in equal measure\, it all adds up to another searing piece of cultural conversation alongside Lee’s other works like Do The Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman.  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets URL:https://www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk/event/white-wall-cinema-jungle-fever/ LOCATION:Wagner Hall CATEGORIES:Cinema ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/webp:https://www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/jfpos.webp END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20230916T183000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20230916T220000 DTSTAMP:20240329T002902 CREATED:20230908T141159Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230908T141336Z UID:2750-1694889000-1694901600@www.wagnerhallbrighton.co.uk SUMMARY:'HAWKS - ANTI-IDIOTS' DESCRIPTION:Brighton Rocks International Film Festival | Whitehawk FC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8.00pm\n\n\n\nDIRECTORS Q&A: 9.30pm\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 50 mins\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrighton Rocks International Film Festival\, in collaboration with Whitehawk FC\, is proud to be hosting an exclusive screening of ‘Hawks – Anti-Idiots’\, a joyous documentary about the football club directed by Hossam Sarhan. The event will take place on Saturday 16th of September.
