DESCRIPTION:JACQUES BECKER’S   4K REMASTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nUndoubtedly one of the greatest films in all of French cinema — and boasting a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes — Casque d’Or stands as a cornerstone of the work of the great French filmmaker Jacques Becker.\n\n\n\n\nThe celebrated wave of American cinema now known as New Hollywood — Bonnie and Clyde\, The Graduate\, and so many others that reshaped modern filmmaking — was itself inspired by the French New Wave and figures like Jean-Luc Godard\, Agnès Varda\, and Jacques Demy. But where did they find their inspiration? Becker\, belonging to the generation before them\, was perhaps the director the New Wave revered most deeply. François Truffaut in particular held Becker’s work — and Casque d’Or above all — in the highest regard\, and with good reason. \n\n\n\nSet during La Belle Époque and loosely based on a true story\, Casque d’Or follows Marie (Simone Signoret)\, a Parisian prostitute and gangster’s moll\, who falls in love with Manda (Serge Reggiani)\, a reformed criminal trying to start anew. Their passion\, however\, soon draws them into a violent clash with Marie’s former lover and his dangerous underworld syndicate. \n\n\n\nA loving recreation of its period\, the film combines lyrical beauty with emotional depth and features wonderfully nuanced performances — most notably from Simone Signoret\, whose radiant and defiant portrayal of Marie became so iconic that it even graced a French postage stamp. But it’s also\, let’s be honest\, a masterpiece. Directed by the legendary Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven — the man behind RoboCop\, Total Recall\, Starship Troopers\, Basic Instinct\, and more recently Elle and Benedetta — Verhoeven is no stranger to both criticism and controversy.. \n\n\n\n\nUpon its 1995 release\, Showgirls was almost universally panned by critics\, dismissed as vulgar\, exploitative\, and downright terrible. But once the (frankly puritanical) outrage subsided\, something fascinating happened: audiences started to reappraise it. What began as mockery evolved into cult worship. Viewers and critics alike began to suspect what\, in hindsight\, seems obvious given Verhoeven’s career — Showgirls isn’t just a really bad movie; it’s a really bad movie on purpose. \n\n\n\nBeneath its camp excess — the wooden dialogue\, cringe-inducing performances\, and spectacularly unsexy sex scenes — lies a razor-sharp satire of the American psyche. Just as RoboCop skewered corporate greed and automation\, and Starship Troopers lampooned the U.S. military-industrial complex and it’s imperialist desires\, Showgirls turns its glittering knives on America’s obsession with commodification\, objectification\, and that ever-elusive ideal: the American Dream — which\, of course\, is simply to be rich. \n\n\n\nA true\, (deliberate) “disasterpiece” from one of cinema’s great satirists\, Showgirls is both an unhinged\, wildly enjoyable ride and a biting critique of American ambition. It’s a film that has to be seen to be believed — and even then\, you might not quite believe it. Dismiss it as shallow trash at your peril. While Emily’s work has focussed on hedgehogs\, her findings reveal how widespread microplastic pollution has become and how it is entering the food chains of wild animals and possibly humans.

We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuantum physics is the foundational theory that governs the behaviour of matter and energy at atomic and subatomic scales. Marking a century since its earliest breakthroughs\, the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. As part of these global celebrations\, Prof. Wilkins will explore how quantum physics underpins our understanding of the cosmos\, focusing on two powerful examples.\n\n\n\nFirst\, the energy that powers stars—including our Sun—comes from nuclear fusion. Classically\, the temperatures inside stars are too low to overcome the repulsive forces between atomic nuclei. However\, quantum tunnelling allows these nuclei to ‘leap’ through this energy barrier\, making fusion—and therefore starlight—possible. \n\n\n\nSecond\, the large-scale structure of the Universe—its galaxies\, stars\, and planets—can be traced back to tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early Universe. During the period of cosmic inflation\, these quantum variations were stretched to astronomical scales\, seeding the structures we observe today. \n\n\n\nThese examples highlight how quantum physics\, though born from the study of the very small\, plays a pivotal role in shaping the vastness of the Universe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephen Wilkins is a Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex\, located just outside Brighton. He earned his Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Durham and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Following a research fellowship at the University of Oxford\, Stephen joined the faculty at Sussex in 2013. \n\n\n\nHis research centres on understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies\, with a particular focus on the earliest stages of cosmic history. To explore these questions\, he combines observations from cutting-edge telescopes—including the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes—with advanced supercomputer simulations. \n\n\n\nBeyond his academic work\, Stephen is a passionate advocate for science communication. Barely tolerated by the locals who remember him\, Mikey embarks on a chaotic journey fueled by charm\, manipulation\, and a string of increasingly poor decisions that make for a concerning yet compelling rollercoaster journey through America at ground level. \n\n\n\nRed Rocket (like Baker’s other works) raises hard questions about the American dream\, through its darkly humorous sensibilities\, and its staggeringly beautiful cinematography\, add to that an electrifying and exceptionally clever performance from Simon Rex\, and Baker has created one of the most surprising movies of recent years. We will also look beyond Earth at the aurora on other planets – both within our solar system and beyond!\n\n\n\nDr Darren Baskill is a lecturer and outreach officer in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Sussex\, with over 25 years’ experience of both professional and amateur astronomy.  He previously taught astronomy at the Royal Observatory Greenwich science centre and planetarium in London\, where he initiated the highly successful Astronomy Photographer of the Year public competition and exhibition\, and he was a calibration scientist for the European XMM-Newton space telescope at the University of Leicester before that\, ensuring that the data delivered to astronomers around the world was of the highest quality. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. Thermal imaging is emerging as a powerful tool to detect our body’s response to stress in real time without contact and in natural settings. It has now been more than 50 years since we set foot on the Moon during the Apollo space missions.\n\n\n\nIn this lecture astronomer Dr Robert Massey (Royal Astronomical Society) and art historian and curator Dr Alexandra Loske (Royal Pavilion\, Brighton) and will show how our obsession with the Moon has manifested itself in the visual arts\, from earliest ritualistic drawings to scientific observation\, Romantic symbolism\, silent movies\, and space race propaganda. \n\n\n\nIn 2019 Alexandra and Robert co-authored a book on the subject: Moon – Art\, Science\, Culture\, which has been translated into Spanish and Chinese. In 2019 Alexandra edited an anthology on recent creative writing on the Moon: Pale Fire – New Writing on the Moon. Most recently\, she contributed to chapters to a major new book on the Moon: Lunar: A History of the Moon in Myths\, Maps + Matter (Thames & Hudson and University of Chicago Press). He will discuss his own research\, which exploits specific cancer mutations to target cancer; the launch of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre\, which brings together scientists\, clinicians\, and people with cancer from across Brighton and Sussex to improve cancer treatments; and his reasons for optimism in targeting cancer.

DESCRIPTION:How to see the Activity on our Closest Star\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we revel in the 2025 solar maximum\, Brighton-based cellist by day and astro photographer by night\, Ivana Peranic\, will take us through best ways to observe and photograph all the amazing features on the surface of the Sun. \n\n\n\nFrom sunspots to filaments and flares\, from £20 solar film to £2000 solar telescopes\, we will explore what is necessary for safe observation and uncovering of our Star’s turbulent activity. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. \n\n\n\nPlease note that the venue has a bar. \n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nIf you can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place
