SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: The Fermi Paradox
DESCRIPTION:Why is the Universe Ghosting Us?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur speaker this month is Brighton Astro legend Tom Elphick \n\n\n\nWith billions of galaxies and trillions of stars in our universe\, the maths suggests we should be part of a bustling\, vibrant cosmic neighbourhood – yet\, for reasons that remain one of science’s greatest mysteries\, we find ourselves in a profound and unsettling silence \n\n\n\nWe’re diving into the Fermi Paradox: the ultimate “where is everybody?” question that challenges everything we think we know about our place in the universe. Whether we are being ghosted by advanced civilisations\, living in a cosmic nature preserve\, or simply arriving too early to the party. \n\n\n\nIf you sign up via meetup but can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place. Please only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring the event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. Brighton Astro is inclusive and welcomes everybody. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT + Q&A with Samira Ahmed
DESCRIPTION: 4K REMASTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special screening of the 1964 Beatles classic A Hard Day’s Night\, followed by a Q&A with acclaimed journalist\, broadcaster\, and author Samira Ahmed\, whose BFI Film Classics book explores the film’s enduring legacy and cultural impact. \n\n\n\nSamira Ahmed is the host of the BBC’s flagship arts programme Front Row on Radio 4\, where she interviews leading film directors\, actors\, writers\, and creators from across the cultural world. She also presents Newswatch on the BBC News Channel. In 2020\, she was named Audio Presenter of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild. A lifelong Beatles fan\, Ahmed’s love for the film began in the late 1970s\, watching her older brother’s home-recorded Betamax copy until it wore out. Decades later\, the film once again became a source of inspiration spurring her on during her landmark 2020 legal victory against the BBC in a high-profile sex discrimination equal pay case. \n\n\n\nAlongside the screening and Q&A\, there will also be an opportunity to purchase copies of Samira’s fascinating book on the film and have them personally signed. Buy the General Admission + Book option at checkout to ensure your copy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE – Doors for this event open at 6.40pm in order that you can enjoy the beer garden prior to the screening. Please arrive before 7.30pm so that the Q&A can begin promptly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore going on to direct multiple Musketeer and Superman movies\, director Richard Lester created what would become not only a cornerstone of Beatles mythology\, but also one of the most influential musical films ever made. Widely credited with helping invent the modern music video (for which he would receive the first MTV Vanguard award at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984)\, A Hard Day’s Night remains a landmark of British cinema and pop culture. \n\n\n\nFrom its exhilarating opening moments\, with the Fab Four fleeing screaming fans through the streets of London\, the film never lets up. John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo race from chaos to comedy as they attempt to make it to a live television performance\, accompanied by Paul’s mischievous “very clean” grandfather\, played by Wilfrid Brambell (Steptoe and Son). \n\n\n\nThe Beatles’ wit\, irreverent Liverpudlian humour\, and extraordinary musical charisma are on full display throughout\, as the film blazed a trail directly setting the template for everything from The Monkees television series to Spice World Spice Girls feature film. Filmed only weeks after the Beatles’ legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show\, A Hard Day’s Night captures the group at the precise moment they transformed from pop sensation into global phenomenon. \n\n\n\n*No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.40pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 87 mins + discussion\n\n\n\nCERT: PG

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: STAND BY ME - outdoor screening
DESCRIPTION: 4K REMASTER –  40TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 6.45pm SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.45pm*\n\n\n\nLAST ADMISSION: 7\,45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 89 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn tribute to the late Rob Reiner\, we’re proud to present a special outdoor screening of one of the most beloved and enduring films of the 1980s\, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. \n\n\n\nSet in the fictional Oregon town of Castle Rock in the summer of 1959 (a location that would become synonymous with King’s work) Stand By Me follows four young friends who set out on a journey to find the body of a local teenager after hearing he has been accidentally killed. Along the way\, their late-summer adventure becomes a poignant exploration of friendship\, growing up\, and the fleeting nature of childhood. Lyrical\, funny and deeply moving\, the film beautifully captures the universal power of youthful bonds. The Times called it “one of the loveliest and most devastating films ever made about the loss of childhood”\, while Rolling Stone described it as “the rare movie that necessarily gets better with time.” \n\n\n\nFeaturing a remarkable young cast\, including Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation)\, River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho)\, Corey Feldman (Gremlins\, The Goonies)\, Jerry O’Connell (Jerry Maguire) and Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys)\, Stand By Me\, named after the iconic Ben E. King song\, is a masterclass in understated\, truthful storytelling. Warm\, nostalgic and quietly profound\, it remains as emotionally resonant today as it was four decades ago. \n\n\n\n*This event is a screening in the outdoor garden space at our usual venue of Wagner Hall\, please feel free to bring cushions or blankets to sit on but please no chairs or very large cushions etc. (Limited chair seats are available for those who may experience difficulty sitting on the floor of the garden\, these will be located to the rear of the garden so as not to obscure other patrons view. Please e-mail us at info@whitewallcinema.co.uk immediately after purchasing your tickets if you require one of these for mobility reasons so we can reserve you one for you. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6.45pm when the bar will be open and music from the era the film is set in (1959) will be playing in the garden\, the screening will then take place at sunset in the garden\, please do dress appropriately for post sunset viewing even though it is August. Last admission will be 7.45pm after which time the doors will be closed. The screening will go ahead regardless of weather; however if there is a significant risk of rain or disruptive winds the screening will happen inside for safety/comfort reasons. \n\n\n\nNo hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: SUMMER WITH MONIKA
DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR: Ingmar Bergman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 6.45pm SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 96 mins\n\n\n\nLANGUAGE: Swedish w/ English subtitles\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoasting a coveted 100% Rotten Tomatoes score\, Summer with Monika is perhaps the first truly great film of Ingmar Bergman’s long and storied career. Bergman would\, of course\, go on to create a body of work that ranks him among the greatest directors of all time\, alongside Kubrick\, Hitchcock and Kurosawa. But Summer with Monika marks the director’s first major turning point\, both on and off screen. \n\n\n\nIt tells the story of two young working-class Swedes who\, disillusioned with everyday life\, steal a boat and embark on an impulsive getaway\, spending an idyllic summer together on a small island. There they experience the first bloom of love and lust before reality comes crashing back into their lives with the arrival of autumn. \n\n\n\nBergman’s first work with his future frequent collaborator Harriet Andersson\, (she and the director would embark on an affair during production… and it shows) the film features a spectacular and now-iconic performance from Andersson as Monika\, embodying an earthy sensuality\, a knowing sexuality and a devilish impetuousness. Despite its apparent simplicity (the film is certainly among the most accessible of Bergman’s works)\, it displays remarkable maturity for the then 34-year-old director\, forming a bridge between his early films and the internationally renowned masterpieces that followed\, including The Seventh Seal\, Wild Strawberries\, Persona and Fanny and Alexander. \n\n\n\nA highly evocative film that captures both the nostalgia of a sensual dream-like summer romance as well as being groundbreakingly gritty in it’s portrayals of working class life\, Summer with Monika proved enormously influential\, serving as a template for both the future creations of The French New Wave and the British Kitchen Sink drama. A poignant portrait of young love\, infidelity and working-class malaise\, it is filled with sumptuous imagery and a youthful breeziness\, all deftly handled by a director beginning to fully grasp the power of his own steely-eyed cinematic vision. Don’t miss the chance to experience it on the big screen as we say farewell to our own summer\, and let the maestro cast his spell in this defining work of cinema that remains essential viewing for any film lover. \n\n\n\nNo hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Consciousness and our place in the universe
DESCRIPTION:Dr Adam Barrett\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7PM | SPEAKER 7.30PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Adam Barrett is Deputy Director of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science and an Associate Professor in Machine Learning and Data Science. He researches the neural basis of consciousness using mathematical and data science methods. This work is inspired by his early work in theoretical physics. He also sometimes works across disciplines and has worked on models of post-growth economics. \n\n\n\n\n7:00pm Doors open\, bar opens\n\n\n\n7:30pm Talk starts\n\n\n\n8:15pm approx Short break followed by Q+A\n\n\n\n9:00pm Event ends\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Adam explains two major insights that science provides about our place in the universe. \n\n\n\nThe first of these is ‘panpsychism’ – consciousness is a fundamental property of matter\, and we’re all in some sense part of the same being. After arguing for this\, there follows a discussion on where we’re at in understanding what is the fundamental physical substrate of consciousness\, via an accessible account of the much-misunderstood integrated information theory. The second insight is ‘eternalism’ – that past\, present and future exist equally. It is explained how this follows from Einstein’s theory of relativity. The talk concludes with a discussion on how these two insights can provide spiritual comfort\, with knock-on benefits for mental health and society. \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: Heartbreakers (1984)
DESCRIPTION:NEW 2K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 7.30PM SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt Is Still 1985 Brighton’s legendary 80s party (every Saturday at Green Door Store) turns 18 this year. To celebrate the night ‘coming of age’ White Wall Cinema are collaborating with 1985 for a season of films called ‘Sex in the 80s’ which continues this September with forgotten 80s classic ‘Heartbreakers’.  \n\n\n\nVery obviously the key influence on Challengers (Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 ménage à trois tennis drama starring Zendaya\, Mike Faist\, and Josh O’Connor)\, this overlooked\, underseen\, tender and sexy buddy movie about two highly competitive male friends (on the racquetball court and off)\, both chronically unsuccessful in love\, is a true forgotten gem. Intelligent framing and lush\, sensual ’80s atmospherics blend with a raw\, confessional style to create something of a mini-masterpiece. \n\n\n\nBased on the personal experiences of director Bobby Roth\, Heartbreakers approaches its subject in the style of a European relationship drama while retaining all the textures of mid-’80s Los Angeles. It’s richly photographed by Michael Ballhaus\, a long time collaborator of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese\, and scored by pioneering electronic group Tangerine Dream (Sorcerer; Thief; Risky Business). \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 98 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm.
