SUMMARY:Waterstones: An Evening With Mona Awad
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE – THIS EVENT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE IN THE WATERSTONES SHOP AT THE TOP OF QUEENS ROAD.\n\n\n\nAfter her sold out event last year celebrating the paperback release of ‘Rouge’\, Mona Awad returns to Brighton with the massively anticipated ‘Bunny’ follow up\, ‘We Love You\, Bunny’.\n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n‘We Love You\, Bunny’ – the book SO many of us have been waiting for. Samantha’s back and she’s written her first novel to critical acclaim. However\, whilst on a stop in New England as part of her book tour\, she encounters her old ‘frenemies’. Furious at how they’ve been portrayed in Samantha’s novel\, they decide to take action and set the record straight. Every bit as dark\, demented and hilarious as the original\, ‘We Love You\, Bunny’ has been described as both prequel & sequel\, and an “unabashedly wild and totally complete standalone novel”. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author \n\n\n\nMona Awad is a Canadian novelist and short story writer known for works of darkly comic fiction. Awad’s debut novel\, 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl\, was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and received the Amazon.ca First Novel Award. \n\n\n\nPlease note\, book & ticket option £23 includes a copy of ‘We Love You Bunny’ (rrp £16.99) available for collection on the night. \n\n\n\nDOORS 6.30pm | EVENT 7.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: TEEN WOLF
DESCRIPTION:40TH ANNIVERSARY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nJust over a month after Back to the Future smashed box office records\, 1985’s hottest property\, Michael J. Fox\, returned to the big screen in this iconic ’80s teen comedy. In Teen Wolf\, Fox plays Scott Howard—an average\, unlucky-in-love teenager and hopeless high school basketball player—whose body starts going through some… unusual changes… it quickly becomes apparent that this is more than just an aggressive case of puberty. Discovering and revealing your identity as a werewolf is hard enough—but try doing it while trying to impress the popular girl and win the big game\n\n\n\n\nEndlessly silly\, proudly escapist\, and unapologetically ’80s\, this high school coming-of-age comedy leans fully into its joyously thin plot and delightfully hokey werewolf premise. Teen Wolf aims squarely for fun\, but also flashes a sly satirical edge beneath its gloriously daft exterior. A spirited B-movie at heart\, Teen Wolf was elevated to box office success thanks to its charming and talented lead. Made for just $4 million\, the film grossed over $80 million\, debuting at No. 2 at the box office—second only to (you guessed it) Back to the Future. \n\n\n\nWhile the 1980s delivered a slew of iconic teen films—from The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Say Anything— it was Teen Wolf that broke new ground by popularizing the supernatural high school teen. paving the way for the likes of The Lost Boys\, Sabrina the Teenage Witch\, Buffy the Vampire Slayer\, Twilight\, Jennifer’s Body\, and Warm Bodies. Not only that this irresistible premise\, spawned a sequel—the brilliantly titled Teen Wolf Too\, with Jason Bateman replacing Fox—an animated ’80s TV series\, and a darker\, a 2010s TV reboot (which even got its own movie). Teen Wolf has undoubtedly cemented its place in pop culture history and remains a deeply enjoyable\, throwaway gem that howls(!) with nostalgia in every scene. \n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8.10pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 92 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.10pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: WHITE NIGHTS
DESCRIPTION: 40TH ANNIVERSARY \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nA totally unexpected approach to the cold war thriller\, White Nights pirouettes into an entirely different category by utilising the electrifying pairing of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines—two of the greatest dancers of the 20th century\, each with wildly different styles\, lighting up the screen together in a film that fuses political tension with jaw-dropping artistry.\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’re a fan of 80s pop culture\, Cold War thrillers\, or simply want to see two of the greatest performers of all time at the peak of their powers\, join us as the nights begin to draw in—and\, in fact\, on the very day the clocks go back (so don’t forget to adjust your watch!)— to delve into this unexpected piece of 80s ephemera named after a Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) phenomenon: the ‘White Nights’—those magical\, and somewhat eerie summer days when the sun never fully sets… \n\n\n\nCelebrating its 40th anniversary\, White Nights comes from director Taylor Hackford director of An Officer and a Gentleman\, The Devil’s Advocate\, Ray). This Cold War thriller follows Nikolai (Mikhail Baryshnikov)\, a world-famous Russian-American ballet dancer whose plane makes an emergency landing in Siberia. Recognised as a defector\, he’s taken into custody by Soviet authorities and placed under house arrest. \n\n\n\nWhile White Nights works as a enjoyably gripping 1980s Cold War thriller\, what truly sets it apart is its remarkable pairing of two dance legends: Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Their talents are showcased in White Nights to breathtaking effect\, with choreography by the legendary Twyla Tharp. Every dance sequence is a visual and emotional feast—electrifying\, athletic\, and deeply expressive. White Nights is can’t miss Sunday evening treat.  \n\n\n\n\nDOORS\,: 6pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 6.40pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 136 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 6.40pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: DON'T LOOK NOW + Q&A
DESCRIPTION: 4K RESTORATION SCREENING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWidely regarded as one of the greatest British films of all time—even among a remarkable run that includes Performance (1970)\, Walkabout (1971)\, and The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976)—Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now is often considered his crowning achievement.\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from a short story by Daphne du Maurier\, the film stars screen legends Julie Christie (Darling\, Doctor Zhivago\, McCabe & Mrs. Miller) and Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H*\, Klute\, Invasion of the Body Snatchers\, Ordinary People) as John and Laura Baxter\, a couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter following a tragic accident. While in Venice\, where John has been commissioned to restore one of the city’s churches\, Laura encounters a pair of sisters who claim to have made contact with the couple’s deceased child. But it’s only when John begins seeing strange and unsettling visions in the city’s labyrinthine streets that he starts to question the boundary between the living and the dead. \n\n\n\nConsidered by some a psychological horror and by others a supernatural thriller\, Don’t Look Now is\, at its heart\, a profound meditation on grief—and one of the most exquisitely crafted\, relentlessly unsettling films in all of cinema. Presented here in a stunning 4K restoration\, experience Roeg’s haunting masterpiece on the big screen and then stay with us after the film for a special Q&A to gain deeper insight the film’s production and enduring power. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be followed by an in-depth discussion with special guest author Justin John Doherty\, who—following appearances at venues such as Cult Plex Manchester and BFI Southbank—will join us to discuss the film and his stunning new coffee table book\, DON’T LOOK NOW AND THEN. Featuring hundreds of previously unpublished photographs and documents\, the book offers a fresh and intimate glimpse into the making of Nicolas Roeg’s masterpiece. \n\n\n\nFollowing the film and Q&A\, there will also be an opportunity to purchase a copy of Justin’s remarkable new book. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 110 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.50pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.20pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: CRIMSON PEAK
DESCRIPTION:EARLY EVENING HALLOWEEN SCREENING\n\n\n\nGUILLERMO DEL TORO – 10TH ANNIVERSARY / 4K REMASTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 6.55pm. There will usually be no admittance from 20 minutes after the films stated start time. No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence \n\n\n\n\n\nGuillermo del Toro — the visionary behind Pan’s Labyrinth\, the Best Picture Oscar-winning The Shape of Water\, the stunning recent Pinocchio animation\, and Netflix’s upcoming $120 million Frankenstein — flexes his gothic-romance muscles in this often-overlooked yet gorgeously crafted modern classic\, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most ornately designed gothic films ever made\, Crimson Peak is a visual feast. Drawing on inspirations such as The Haunting\, The Innocents & The Shining\, Del Toro’s signature lavish production design and richly detailed aesthetic are on full display in this director-approved 4K transfer — a version that absolutely deserves to be experienced on the big screen. Within the film’s grand and hauntingly beautiful sets\, flashes of grotesque horror and moments of genuine spookiness emerge\, creating one of the most chilling and visually arresting pieces of cinema in recent memory. \n\n\n\nSet in the 1880s\, the story follows aspiring writer Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska)\, who is haunted by the ghostly memory of her mother. When she falls for the enigmatic Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston)\, he whisks her away from Buffalo\, New York\, to his ancestral home\, Allerdale Hall — a crumbling Gothic mansion built atop blood-red clay in the remote English countryside. But the decaying estate seems to possess a sinister life of its own. As Edith tries to adjust to her unsettling new home\, she soon suspects that Thomas and his cold\, mysterious sister\, Lady Lucille Sharpe (Oscar winner Jessica Chastain)\, may be hiding dark and terrible secrets. A true masterpiece of decadent design and gothic storytelling\, Crimson Peak is unmissable this Halloween. \n\n\n\nCatch it in our special early evening screening — or make a night of it with a discounted joint ticket for our late-session showing of Dario Argento’s Deep Red\, for a back-to-back Halloween double bill drenched in blood-red horror and scarlet-tinged spookiness. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 6.55pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 119 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: DEEP RED
DESCRIPTION:LATE EVENING HALLOWEEN SCREENING\n\n\n\nDARIO ARGENTO – 50TH ANNIVERSARY / 4K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 9.35pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 10.00pm. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence \n\n\n\n\n\nDario Argento — the wonderfully deranged Italian horror maestro behind genre-defining classics like Suspiria\, Tenebrae\, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage — brings us what many fans consider his greatest work\, and the ultimate giallo film: Deep Red. Celebrating its 50th anniversary\, this special late-evening screening on Halloween night\n\n\n\n\nLate one evening\, while wandering the streets of Rome\, English jazz pianist Marcus Daly (David Hemmings — Blow-Up\, Gladiator) witnesses a brutal axe murder through the window of a high-rise apartment. Rushing to the scene in an attempt to catch the killer\, Marcus finds he’s already too late… or is he? What unfolds is a deliciously twisted mystery that draws both Marcus and eccentric journalist Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi) into a surreal web of murder\, memory\, and misdirection. \n\n\n\nDeep Red is a hyper-stylised noir drenched in Argento’s signature aesthetic — with arguably the most dazzling cinematography of his entire career\, all underscored by a pulsing\, prog-rock soundtrack from his legendary collaborators\, Goblin. Released at the height of Italy’s giallo craze — a movement defined by stylish\, violent murder mysteries — Deep Red features some of the most inventive and shocking set-pieces in all of horror cinema. While Suspiria (made directly after this) may be Argento’s most famous film\, Deep Red\, presented here in a gorgeous new 4K restoration of it’s full length original cut\, is widely considered his crowning achievement\, where his cinematic trademarks are at their most refined and ferociously imaginative. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this terrifying late-night screening — or make a full night of it with a discounted joint ticket for our earlier showing of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak\, for a Halloween double bill soaked in blood-red horror and lavish\, scarlet-tinged spookiness. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 9.35pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 10pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 127 mins\n\n\n\nLANGUAGE: English + some Italian w/English Subtitles\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: The Quantum Universe
DESCRIPTION:Professor Stephen Wilkins from the University of Sussex\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuantum physics is the foundational theory that governs the behaviour of matter and energy at atomic and subatomic scales. Marking a century since its earliest breakthroughs\, the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. As part of these global celebrations\, Prof. Wilkins will explore how quantum physics underpins our understanding of the cosmos\, focusing on two powerful examples.\n\n\n\nFirst\, the energy that powers stars—including our Sun—comes from nuclear fusion. Classically\, the temperatures inside stars are too low to overcome the repulsive forces between atomic nuclei. However\, quantum tunnelling allows these nuclei to ‘leap’ through this energy barrier\, making fusion—and therefore starlight—possible. \n\n\n\nSecond\, the large-scale structure of the Universe—its galaxies\, stars\, and planets—can be traced back to tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early Universe. During the period of cosmic inflation\, these quantum variations were stretched to astronomical scales\, seeding the structures we observe today. \n\n\n\nThese examples highlight how quantum physics\, though born from the study of the very small\, plays a pivotal role in shaping the vastness of the Universe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephen Wilkins is a Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex\, located just outside Brighton. He earned his Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Durham and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Following a research fellowship at the University of Oxford\, Stephen joined the faculty at Sussex in 2013. \n\n\n\nHis research centres on understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies\, with a particular focus on the earliest stages of cosmic history. To explore these questions\, he combines observations from cutting-edge telescopes—including the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes—with advanced supercomputer simulations. \n\n\n\nBeyond his academic work\, Stephen is a passionate advocate for science communication. He has led three exhibits at the prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and delivered dozens of public talks aimed at making the wonders of the Universe accessible to all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nIf you can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place \n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence \n\n\n\n\n\nWith a thoroughly deserved 98% on Rotten Tomatoes\, Pablo Berger’s Oscar-nominated Robot Dreams is\, without a doubt\, one of the most tender and touching films in recent memory. Unlike any animated film you’ve ever seen\, its beautifully crafted\, pop-coloured world and deceptively simple storytelling unfold into a masterful\, gorgeously wistful tale of love\, friendship\, loss\, and hope — one we truly can’t recommend enough for big screen viewing.\n\n\n\n\nSet in 1980s Manhattan\, the story follows Dog\, a solitary figure navigating life in the big city. One day\, after seeing a television advert\, he orders and assembles a robotic companion. What follows is the blossoming of a beautiful friendship\, as Dog introduces Robot to the wonders of New York. They become inseparable — until one fateful summer evening\, a malfunction forces Dog to make an impossible decision. Will they ever find their way back to each other? \n\n\n\nThis bittersweet tragi-comedy is an ode to loneliness and the quiet resilience needed to overcome it. It’s a poetic meditation on connection\, memory\, and hope. Eschewing the usual tropes of exploring ‘evil AI’ or ironic humour that plague so many animated features\, Robot Dreams offers instead a profoundly human story — one that earns its place among the most affecting pieces of cinema ever made. \n\n\n\nAt once achingly melancholic and radiantly hopeful\, it’s a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll — and you’ll never hear Earth\, Wind & Fire’s “September” the same way again. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7pm*\n\n\n\nSCREENING START TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nFILM RUN TIME: 102mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Plastic on the Menu
DESCRIPTION:What Hedgehogs Are Really Eating\n\n\n\nWith Emily Thrift\, University of Sussex\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7PM | SPEAKER 7.30PM \n\n\n\nEmily Thrift is a fourth-year PhD student at the University of Sussex. Her research focuses on the presence of microplastics in wild terrestrial animals and the wider environment. Emily completed an MSci in Zoology at the University of Sussex. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo\, what’s on the menu for hedgehogs these days? Alongside their natural prey of beetles\, worms\, and slugs\, there may be an unexpected ingredient — plastic. \n\n\n\nThis talk uncovers how plastic pollution makes its way to a hedgehog’s stomach. While Emily’s work has focussed on hedgehogs\, her findings reveal how widespread microplastic pollution has become and how it is entering the food chains of wild animals and possibly humans.

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: SHOWGIRLS
DESCRIPTION:PAUL VERHOEVEN’S – 4K REMASTER – 30TH ANNIVERSARY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nLet’s start here: Showgirls is\, without question\, the most fun you can possibly have in a cinema. But it’s also\, let’s be honest\, a masterpiece. Directed by the legendary Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven — the man behind RoboCop\, Total Recall\, Starship Troopers\, Basic Instinct\, and more recently Elle and Benedetta — Verhoeven is no stranger to both criticism and controversy.. \n\n\n\n\nUpon its 1995 release\, Showgirls was almost universally panned by critics\, dismissed as vulgar\, exploitative\, and downright terrible. But once the (frankly puritanical) outrage subsided\, something fascinating happened: audiences started to reappraise it. What began as mockery evolved into cult worship. Viewers and critics alike began to suspect what\, in hindsight\, seems obvious given Verhoeven’s career — Showgirls isn’t just a really bad movie; it’s a really bad movie on purpose. \n\n\n\nBeneath its camp excess — the wooden dialogue\, cringe-inducing performances\, and spectacularly unsexy sex scenes — lies a razor-sharp satire of the American psyche. Just as RoboCop skewered corporate greed and automation\, and Starship Troopers lampooned the U.S. military-industrial complex and it’s imperialist desires\, Showgirls turns its glittering knives on America’s obsession with commodification\, objectification\, and that ever-elusive ideal: the American Dream — which\, of course\, is simply to be rich. \n\n\n\nA true\, (deliberate) “disasterpiece” from one of cinema’s great satirists\, Showgirls is both an unhinged\, wildly enjoyable ride and a biting critique of American ambition. It’s a film that has to be seen to be believed — and even then\, you might not quite believe it. Dismiss it as shallow trash at your peril. Showgirls is as adventurous\, invigorating\, important\, and outrageously entertaining as American cinema gets — and as honest about America as any film ever made. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 131 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.50pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.20pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: CASQUE D'OR
DESCRIPTION:JACQUES BECKER’S 4K REMASTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nUndoubtedly one of the greatest films in all of French cinema — and boasting a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes — Casque d’Or stands as a cornerstone of the work of the great French filmmaker Jacques Becker.\n\n\n\n\nThe celebrated wave of American cinema now known as New Hollywood — Bonnie and Clyde\, The Graduate\, and so many others that reshaped modern filmmaking — was itself inspired by the French New Wave and figures like Jean-Luc Godard\, Agnès Varda\, and Jacques Demy. But where did they find their inspiration? Becker\, belonging to the generation before them\, was perhaps the director the New Wave revered most deeply. François Truffaut in particular held Becker’s work — and Casque d’Or above all — in the highest regard\, and with good reason. \n\n\n\nSet during La Belle Époque and loosely based on a true story\, Casque d’Or follows Marie (Simone Signoret)\, a Parisian prostitute and gangster’s moll\, who falls in love with Manda (Serge Reggiani)\, a reformed criminal trying to start anew. Their passion\, however\, soon draws them into a violent clash with Marie’s former lover and his dangerous underworld syndicate. \n\n\n\nA loving recreation of its period\, the film combines lyrical beauty with emotional depth and features wonderfully nuanced performances — most notably from Simone Signoret\, whose radiant and defiant portrayal of Marie became so iconic that it even graced a French postage stamp. Casque d’Or remains one of cinema’s greatest tragic love stories and a landmark achievement from one of France’s finest directors at the height of his powers. \n\n\n\nAs François Truffaut wrote: \n\n\n\n“Casque d’Or\, sometimes funny\, sometimes tragic\, finally proves that by a refined use of a shift in tone\, one can surpass parody\, look upon a picturesque and bloody past\, and resurrect it with tenderness and violence.” \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 98 mins\n\n\n\nLANGUAGE: French w/ English Subtitles\n\n\n\nCERT: 12A (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.30pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: THE GOONIES
DESCRIPTION:40TH ANNIVERSARY – 4K REMASTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most beloved films of the 1980s\, The Goonies is a wildly fun kids’ classic from Superman and Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner. Blending the sassy\, the hip\, the innocent\, and the wild\, the film features an all-star cast of young ’80s talent including Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings\, Stranger Things)\, Josh Brolin (Weapons\, No Country for Old Men\, Dune)\, Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys\, Stand By Me)\, Martha Plimpton (The Mosquito Coast\, Parenthood)\, and Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones\, Everything Everywhere All At Once)\n\n\n\n\nAs a group of West Coast kids spend their final days together before their homes are bulldozed to make way for a country club and golf course\, they stumble upon an ancient treasure map. Determined to save their neighbourhood\, they embark on a swashbuckling adventure that leads them deep into a dangerous underground cavern — with the local crime family\, The Fratellis (played by Anne Ramsey – Throw Momma from the Train\, Robert Davi – Die Hard\, and Joe Pantoliano – The Matrix\, The Sopranos\, Bound) — hot on their trail. \n\n\n\nFew films have become such enduring icons of pop culture as The Goonies and its unforgettable characters — Chunk\, Data\, Sloth\, and Mama Fratelli and with such iconic instantly recognisable 80s moments like “The Truffle Shuffle” and “Hey\, you guys!” With a story by Steven Spielberg and a script by Chris Columbus (Home Alone\, Mrs. Doubtfire\, Harry Potter)\, this riotous kids’ adventure — with its perfect blend of 1980s innocence and attitude — remains as dynamic as ever in this stunning 4K restoration. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this special 40th Anniversary screening — the grand finale of the It Is Still 1985 Movie Club for the year! \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 114 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 12A (Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.00pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES
DESCRIPTION:STEVEN SPIELBERG 40TH ANNIVERSARY – CHRISTMAS SPECIAL\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nIf these days you like your Harry Potter without any actual Harry Potter in it\, you’ll love Young Sherlock Holmes.\n\n\n\n\nThe story follows a young Watson (Alan Cox — yes\, the son of Brian\, and bearing a remarkable resemblance to a certain young wizard) during his first term at a Victorian London boarding school\, where he befriends a teenage Sherlock Holmes (Nicholas Rowe). When a series of bizarre deaths begin to occur around campus\, seemingly the result of strange hallucinations\, Holmes and Watson set out to investigate\, aided by fellow student Elizabeth (Sophie Ward) and a who’s who of vintage British character actors familiar from Doctor Who\, Coronation Street\, Rising Damp\, Brideshead Revisited\, The Elephant Man\, Brighton Rock\, The Great Escape\, The Avengers\, The Prisoner\, Yes Minister\, and many\, many more. \n\n\n\nDirected by Barry Levinson\, right in the middle of an extraordinary run that included Diner\, The Natural\, Good Morning\, Vietnam\, and Rain Man (for which he won the Oscar for Best Director)\, Young Sherlock Holmes was ground-breaking in many ways\, including featuring the first fully CGI character in film history. Blending Conan Doyle’s classic detective world with an Indiana Jones–style sense of adventure\, it’s a deeply underappreciated gem that invites endless comparisons to the Harry Potter series\, despite predating the first novel by over a decade. \n\n\n\nThis joyous coming-of-age\, boarding school\, supernatural adventure mystery remains a forgotten treasure\, and we can’t wait to bring it back to the big screen for this special 40th anniversary screening. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 109 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16’s must be accompanied by and adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.30pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: BRAZIL
DESCRIPTION:TERRY GILLIAM 40TH ANNIVERSARY – CHRISTMAS SPECIAL\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally known as the mad genius behind the “stomping foot” and other iconic animations for the legendary Monty Python’s Flying Circus\, Terry Gilliam got his first taste of directing when he co-helmed the classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975. Over the following decades\, Gilliam evolved into one of cinema’s great visionaries\, a Hollywood outsider whose work stood firmly against the factory line of corporate moviemaking.\n\n\n\n\nThe story follows hapless low-level bureaucrat Sam Lowery (Jonathan Pryce – Wolf Hall\, Game of Thrones)\, who repeatedly daydreams about rescuing the same beautiful woman. Just before Christmas (yes\, it’s a kind of bizarre Christmas movie)\, Sam discovers an administrative error at work that has led to the accidental arrest\, and subsequent death\, of an innocent man\, while the fugitive terrorist Harry Tuttle (Robert De Niro) remains at large. As Sam tries to untangle the mess\, he encounters the woman from his dreams (Kim Greist) and unintentionally turns himself into an enemy of the state. What follows is his hilarious and beautifully bizarre struggle to navigate a dystopian\, polluted\, hyper-consumerist\, and suffocatingly bureaucratic world in the desperate hope of making sense of it all. \n\n\n\nA landmark film brimming with unfettered visual imagination\, Brazil remains a true masterwork\, a madcap classic that\, even 40 years later\, fizzes with invention\, relevance\, and Gilliam’s signature brand of sharp\, absurd\, dark comedy. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Brain–Body Conversations
DESCRIPTION:How body rhythms shape brain physiology\n\n\n\nProf Iris Asllani\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7PM | SPEAKER 7.30PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Iris will explore how the brain’s physiology is shaped—sometimes quietly\, sometimes dramatically—by the body’s own rhythms. \n\n\n\nWe’ll look at how MRI can measure cerebral blood flow\, how pulsations from the heart and lungs leave their imprint on the brain\, and how cerebrovascular reactivity reveals the brain’s ability to adapt. We will close with a glimpse of magnetic resonance elastography\, which lets us “feel” the brain’s mechanical properties in vivo and highlights the work we are doing to link the brain’s mechanics with its function. \n\n\n\nIris Asllani is Associate Professor and Head of MRI Physics in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Sussex. Her work centres on developing MRI methods to study the brain—its physiology\, metabolism\, and the body rhythms that shape it. Trained originally in Theoretical Nuclear Physics at the University of Tirana\, she went on to receive two Fulbright Scholarships to pursue her Master’s and PhD at the University of Washington in the U.S. She later joined Columbia University in New York\, where she established the Brain Perfusion Program at the then newly founded MRI Centre. Beyond her research\, Dr. Asllani is active in global engineering and education. She is an adjunct professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and serves as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Advisory Board for the Consortium for Advancement of MRI Education and Research in Africa (CAMERA).

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: THE DEAD ZONE
DESCRIPTION:From acclaimed body-horror master David Cronenberg (The Fly\, Videodrome\, Crash\, Scanners\, Dead Ringers\, etc.) comes this superlative Stephen King adaptation—an elegant fusion of horror\, relationship drama\, and psychological-political thriller.\n\n\n\n\nA prescient and highly entertaining supernatural thriller\, The Dead Zone features an excellent\, nuanced performance from Walken and stands as one of Cronenberg’s most gripping\, bleak\, relevant\, and unexpectedly romantic films. Here the director steps away from his signature body-horror terrain to focus on the terrors of the mind\, resulting in one of the most poignant\, powerful\, and strangely humane works of his career. \n\n\n\nIn what is usually the festivity free “dead zone” of January\, treat yourself to a Friday night taking in this wonderfully wintry New England mood piece\, stacked with pulpy thrills\, elevated by the inspired pairing of one of America’s great directors with one of its most entertaining storytellers. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSCREENING START TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nFILM RUN TIME: 103mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: ROOFMAN
DESCRIPTION:You might be forgiven for assuming this true-crime comedy-drama is merely a popcorn vehicle for the indisputable talents of its star\, Channing Tatum (Magic Mike\, Foxcatcher). In reality\, Roofman—directed by U.S. indie film stalwart Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine\, The Place Beyond the Pines) is filled with deft\, thoughtful touches that elevate it into one of the most surprisingly poignant and enjoyable pieces of crowd-pleasing cinema in recent memory.\n\n\n\n\nThis uncharacteristically light-hearted drama from a director better known for brooding intensity navigates its necessary tonal shifts with remarkable ease\, resulting in an oddly compelling\, funny\, quirky\, and quietly affecting film that surprises at every turn. Expertly tailored to Tatum’s natural charisma (arguably delivering a career-best performance) he is supported by an outstanding ensemble\, including LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out\, Sorry to Bother You\, Uncut Gems\, Knives Out)\, Juno Temple (Ted Lasso\, Fargo)\, Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)\, and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom\, Rogue One). \n\n\n\nBeautifully shot and assuredly directed\, Cianfrance allows the shaggy-dog\, lovable-rogue elements to flourish without ever losing sight of the story’s social grounding. A glorious exercise in noughties nostalgia\, stylish crowd-pleasing filmmaking\, and stealth heartbreak\, Roofman feels destined to become a sleeper hit. Best experienced with an audience\, it’s a modern popcorn movie with genuine soul—and one that comes highly recommended. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.50pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 126 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.20pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.50pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: TAXI DRIVER
DESCRIPTION:MARTIN SCORSESE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY NEW 4K REMASTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the cornerstones of modern cinema\, we celebrate a true masterpiece with a special 50th anniversary screening of the newly remastered 4K of Taxi Driver. In a career filled with iconic films\, including Mean Streets\, Raging Bull\, Goodfellas\, Casino\, The Wolf of Wall Street\, and Killers of the Flower Moon -Taxi Driver stands out as arguably Martin Scorsese’s most influential and searingly powerful work\, a film that single-handedly turned the landscape of cinema on its head.\n\n\n\n\nThe signature role of perhaps the greatest screen actor of his generation\, Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle\, a disturbed loner who takes a job driving a cab on the graveyard shift in New York. Confronted daily by the urban decay and perceived sleaze of the city at night\, Travis gradually detaches from reality\, cultivating a dark desire for violence and retribution. The film also features a remarkable performance from a then-12-year-old Jodie Foster\, alongside an equally intense and unsettling turn from Harvey Keitel\, at the height of his powers\, as her manipulative pimp. \n\n\n\nA defining masterpiece of American cinema\, Taxi Driver remains just as powerful\, and perhaps even more relevant\, 50 years after its initial release. This collaboration between arguably the greatest actor/director duo in film history\, Scorsese and De Niro\, presents the definitive portrait of a man on the edge\, offering profound insight into one of today’s most pervasive societal issues: the damaged and alienated male psyche. Brimming with emotional depth\, political complexity\, and some of the most daring technical filmmaking in all of cinema\, seeing this on the big screen is an experience YOU cannot miss. And yes… I’m talking to YOU. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 114 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.15pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.45pm. SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: Autonomy in Robotics for Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Dexter Shepherd from the University of Sussex\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring distant worlds presents a unique challenge: robots in space can’t rely on real-time control from Earth because communication is limited by the speed of light. Although today’s missions\, such as Curiosity and Perseverance\, carry software that helps them stay safe\, we are still far from achieving true robotic autonomy. The future of space exploration will depend on robots that can make their own decisions\, protect themselves\, and boldly venture into places no robot has gone before.\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dexter will share his research on how we can help robots begin to understand their environment. Often\, we don’t have detailed training data to tell a robot exactly what actions are right or wrong\, we only know whether it succeeded at the task. This opens the door to powerful approaches inspired by nature: using evolutionary algorithms to allow robots to evolve their own behaviours\, or drawing directly from the strategies insects use to navigate the world. \n\n\n\nHowever\, moving from simulated or biological inspiration into the real world brings challenges. Robots need rich\, reliable sensing to connect what they learned in simulation with what they encounter in reality. In this talk\, we will explore these sensing challenges\, the “simulation-to-reality gap\,” and the key steps needed to create truly autonomous robots for the next era of space exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDexter Shepherd is finishing his PhD in Bio-inspired Artificial intelligence and robotics at the University of Sussex. Here he has spent many years researching into robots that understand and adapt to their terrain through tactile sensing and evolutionary strategies. In addition to his research\, he has been greatly involved in outreach in schools and internationally where he leads educational courses in hardware and machine learning across the African continent. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. \n\n\n\nPlease only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nIf you can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place.

We push on the world and the world pushes back. Over a century ago we discovered that some interventions produced a big surprise: the world is quantum. \n\n\n\nQuantum theory is notoriously weird\, but we understand it well enough to use it. Quantum technology seeks effective strategies to control the quantum world to make us wealthier\, healthier and safer. \n\n\n\nIn this talk Gerard Milburn will describe some quantum technologies already changing our lives\, including new navigation tools and algorithms for cybersecurity. The next step is Embedded AI\, delivering ‘self-driving laboratories’\, accelerating scientific discovery\, and leading to quantum technologies beyond human imagination. \n\n\n\nGerard Milburn was the founding Director of the Australian Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems\, established in 2011. In 2024 he moved to the UK where he is a Quantum Fellow at the National Quantum Computing Centre in the UK. He has worked in the fields of quantum optics\, quantum control\, engineered quantum systems and recently quantum learning machines. In 2001\, together with Knill and Laflamme he published a scheme for quantum computing with photons\, known as the KLM scheme\, that has had a major impact on the experiments in quantum optics.

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps the pre-eminent filmmaker of his generation\, Paul Thomas Anderson has directed such contemporary classics as One Battle After Another\, Licorice Pizza\, Phantom Thread\, There Will Be Blood\, Magnolia\, and Boogie Nights. This Valentine’s Day\, we bring you (as ever) a Valentine’s film that celebrates romantic love through an alternative lens: Punch-Drunk Love\, Anderson’s wonderfully idiosyncratic\, off-beat ode to loneliness and the act of finding love. \n\n\n\nAdam Sandler stars as Barry Egan\, a socially awkward small-business owner whose overwhelming loneliness is matched only by his erratic temper and obsessive hoarding of frequent-flyer mile coupons. When Barry inadvertently attracts the affection of another lonely soul\, Lena (an incandescent Emily Watson)\, their tentative\, star-crossed romance is threatened by a swindling phone-sex operator and her con-man boss\, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his most unforgettable and maniacal performances. \n\n\n\nBring your significant other or fly solo\, it matters not.. this Anderson masterpiece will satisfy a previously unknown corner of your soul\, with its beauty\, naivety\, complexity\, and its powerful punch of human empathy. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSCREENING START TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nFILM RUN TIME: 95 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.30pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: TO CATCH A THIEF
DESCRIPTION:ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S 4K REMASTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nYou can buy tickets for this screening only or take advantage of our discount ticket for both nights of the Vista Vision weekend to see One Eyed Jacks also.\n\n\n\nThis past year has seen the return of one of cinema’s most exciting formats\, with The Brutalist\, One Battle After Another\, the upcoming Emma Stone / Yorgos Lanthimos collaboration Bugonia\, the new Tom Cruise / Alejandro G. Iñárritu project\, the latest Margot Robbie / Jacob Elordi / Emerald Fennell film\, and new works from both M. Night Shyamalan and Greta Gerwig — all utilising the classic Paramount VistaVision process.\n\n\n\n\nBut what is it that is proving so irresistible to modern filmmakers\, it has prompted a widespread revival of a format that lay dormant for over sixty years? The answer lies in the magic of the select group of films produced during VistaVision’s original heyday. Over this very special VistaVision Weekend\, we present two of the most significant titles from that extraordinary list. \n\n\n\nThe very first Hitchcock film to employ Vista Vision (he would go on to make four more)\, To Catch a Thief stands as easily the director’s most glamorous work and comfortably sits among the upper echelons of his remarkable filmography. Pairing Cary Grant with Grace Kelly — fresh from her Best Actress Oscar win — Hitchcock transports us to the glittering French Riviera for a sun-soaked romance between Kelly’s daring socialite Frances Stevens and Grant’s retired cat burglar John Robie. When a new jewel thief threatens Robie’s now reformed reputation\, he must uncover the imposter’s identity to prove his innocence. \n\n\n\nThis wonderfully enjoyable romp sees its two radiant stars rivalled only by the luminous VistaVision photography of the Riviera itself. Bubbling with humour\, spice\, and sparkling dialogue\, To Catch a Thief delivers romantic suspense in the classic Hitchcock mould — all the while (and deliberately) never ruffling Grace Kelly’s exquisite Edith Head costumes or disturbing Cary Grant’s debonair disposition. \n\n\n\nCharm and chemistry flow through every frame of this the most picturesque of all Hitchcock’s classics\, a film that exemplifies VistaVision’s power as a vehicle for cinematic visual artistry by a master director but also as a conduit for pure\, easy-going glamourous entertainment on the big screen. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 106 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.00pm. \n\n\n\nOne-Eyed Jacks has a history as dramatic as the film itself. Originally penned by legendary director Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch)\, production was first set to be helmed by Stanley Kubrick\, who departed just days before shooting began. In an extraordinary twist\, Marlon Brando—already hailed as the greatest actor of his generation—stepped in to direct\, creating what would become his only film as a director. \n\n\n\nWhat followed was the actor of actors directing as only a truly great actor could. Brando’s characteristic passion\, perfectionism\, and intensity pour from every frame. Working with master cinematographer Charles Lang (Some Like It Hot\, The Magnificent Seven)\, Brando crafts strikingly composed images and draws out a series of extraordinary performances from his cast—most notably from Pina Pellicer and Katy Jurado (High Noon)\, as well as his long time collaborator and friend Karl Malden\, with whom he had previously worked on A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront.  \n\n\n\nA meditation on friendship\, betrayal\, and revenge\, this romantic anti-Western stands as a one-of-a-kind work from one of cinema’s greatest and most enigmatic talents. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 5.40pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 6.10pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 141 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 5.40pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 6.10pm. The aim is to create multiple connections across the urban fringes and rural areas of the Downs\, restoring and reconnecting the fragmented and degraded areas of chalk grassland which once covered this area \n\n\n\nAt Wilding Waterhall Nature Reserve – formerly Waterhall Golf Club – rare chalk grassland is being restored and a rich mosaic of downland habitats created for wildlife. Grazing animals\, and an army of enthusiastic volunteers\, are enabling this transformation to be achieved with minimal carbon emissions\, whilst maximising opportunities for the engagement of local communities. \n\n\n\nThe reserve has already become the perfect living classroom for local schools\, universities\, community groups and local residents. \n\n\n\nMike Luscombe has been working for Brighton & Hove City Council as Education Ranger at Waterhall since 2023. His role is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Changing Chalk Project.
