SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Lasers: Versatile Quantum Tools Made of light
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nYou have probably met lasers in your day-to-day life\, perhaps to bring a music concert to life\, or to direct your gaze in a PowerPoint presentation. Lasers are beams of amplified light which we can control very precisely. They are powerful tools inside and outside of science. Laser uses include quantum computing\, precision cutting\, medicine and\, in the case of the ITCM group at Sussex\, searching for dark matter and new physics. This talk will explore all things laser: how they work\, how we control and manipulate laser light\, and how lasers are used both inside and outside the lab. \n\n\n\nAmber Shepherd is a PhD student at the University of Sussex in the Ion-Trap Cavity-QED and Molecular Physics (ITCM) group. She is working on an experiment which aims to use quantum technology to test fundamental physics.

All uniformly giving career best performances the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Talented Mr. Ripley)\, Julianne Moore (Still Alice)\, Tom Cruise (who is nothing short of revelatory here)\, John C. Reilly (The Sisters Brothers)\, Jason Robards (All The President’s Men)\, William H. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: SILENT RUNNING
DESCRIPTION:After years of creating the game-changing special effects for movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey\, Close Encounters\, and Blade Runner\, legendary special effects supervisor Douglas Trumball turned his hand to directing. This\, his remarkable debut\, casts the irrepressible Bruce Dern (The Driver\, The Burbs\, Nebraska\, The Hateful Eight) as Freeman Lowell\, an interstellar botanist and caretaker of the last ecosystem in existence\, (now that earth is barren of all flora and fauna) on a space station near Saturn. Featuring Trumbull’s trademark special effects the film is also a wonderfully heartfelt piece featuring ecological themes light years ahead of its time. A cult classic amongst film fans and critics alike\, with Mark Kermode listing it as a personal favourite that he prefers over and above Kubrick’s 2001 \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.40pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8.10pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 89 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: U (under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: THE OLD MAN & THE GUN
DESCRIPTION:This is the remarkable true story of Forrest Tucker\, who confounded the authorities and enchanted the public by staging an audacious escape from maximum-security prison San Quentin at the age of 70\, in order to embark upon a string of bank heists armed with little more than his personal charisma. Robert Redford (All The President’s Men) deploys all his charm as the ageing bank robber in this movie that serves as a beautiful final starring role for the screen great and in a touching tribute to his own career. \n\n\n\nAccompanied by a marvellous cast that includes Sissy Spacek (Carrie/Badlands)\, Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea / Oppenheimer) as the Police Detective tasked with catching the world’s most polite criminal\, Tika Sumpter (Southside With You)\, Tucker’s accomplices played by the marvellous duo of Danny Glover (The Color Purple) and Tom Waits (Down By Law) as well as appearances by John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman/Tenet)\, Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale)\, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire) and Keith Carradine (Nashville). Helmed by visionary director David Lowery (responsible for A24’s A Ghost Story\, and The Green Knight) this is a wonderfully poignant\, funny\, wistful take on the ‘Catch Me If You Can’ style crime caper. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 93 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 12 (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: SECRET MOVIE CLUB
DESCRIPTION:A SPECIAL 80S AUDIO VISUAL MIXTAPE SET + MYSTERY 80S MOVIE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor this VERY SPECIAL edition of Secret Movie Club we are once again collaborating with Brighton’s legendary 80s party It Is Still 1985 (Every Saturday at Green Door Store)\, to celebrate 16 years of parties. For this special event we are not only bringing you a mystery cult classic from the decade\, but the event will begin with a special pre-show 1985 extended audio visual mixtape set\, chronicling the styles\, the action\, the heartaches\, the faces\, the fads and the (often questionable) genius of that most glitteringly ludicrous of decades that was the 80s. \n\n\n\nAll that followed by a screening an 80s classic movie that lies just off the beaten path\, i.e. something a bit less obvious than standard oft. replayed classics like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off\, or Top Gun\, but still rich in that magical ingredient of pure 80s style fun. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 100 Mins Film + 60 Min AV Mixtape Set \n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: PAST LIVES
DESCRIPTION:+ OPTIONAL POST FILM DISCUSSION GROUP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeline Song’s remarkable debut (a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee no less!) concentrates on two close childhood friends\, Nora Moon and Hae Sung\, who are separated when Nora’s family emigrate to Toronto. Many years later and now living in New York Nora discovers Hae Sung has been trying to contact her and the two rekindle their friendship online. What follows is an entirely modern romance movie that forgoes the normal clichés and sets about forging an more understated route through its central characters inner lives as Nora (now married to Arthur) must reckon with the larger meaning of her friendship to Hae Sung. Past Lives offers mature meditations on fate\, friendship\, love\, and the large collection of very small choices we all make that combine to create our lives. \n\n\n\nThis film will be followed by an optional post film discussion group! Join us for a screening of this brilliant film with an optional chance to stay on and discuss the film in a relaxed informal post film group chat. Contribute or just listen in\, it’s a fun and interesting way to better understand the nuance of any great piece of cinema. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 106 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 12 (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\nLANGUAGE: English & Korean w/ English subtitles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: THE CHASE
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating snapshot of mid 60s filmmaking finds itself caught between the classical sensibilities of legendary Hollywood producer Sam Spiegel (On The Waterfront\, The Bridge On The River Kwai\, Laurence of Arabia) and its revolutionary director Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde). Influenced by the French New Wave\, Penn allows burgeoning countercultural attitudes of the era to seep into cinema for the first time in the most fascinating of ways. \n\n\n\nAdapted by Lillian Hellman from the novel and play by Horton Foote (Oscar winner for the To Kill A Mockingbird screenplay) the film explores the tensions in the small town of Tarl\, Texas when Bubber Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison. Town Sheriff\, Calder (Marlon Brando on blistering form) feels he must apprehend Reeves quickly in order to appease local residents on the verge of vigilantism\, all egged on by local oil baron Val Rogers (E.G. Marshall) who wants to protect his son Jake (James Fox) who is sleeping with Reeve’s wife Anna (a brilliant Jane Fonda). The film brilliantly captures the moral excesses of its characters boiling over as it tackles themes of racism\, the sexual revolution\, violence\, class\, and corruption which still plague America to this very day. Sublimely written\, directed and performed\, The Chase is a seminal work which is ripe for rediscovery. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 134 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Brighton Café Scientifique - Experience Machines: How Our Minds Predict and Shape Reality
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nHuman brains are nature’s own ‘prediction machines’ – evolved organs that are constantly trying to predict flows of sensation\, both from within our own body and from the wider world. This casts perception and feeling as forms of ‘controlled hallucination’ in which raw sensory information delivers experience only relative to our brain’s best predictions. These accounts suggest new ways of understanding both typical and atypical forms of human experience. They also suggest various ways we can ‘hack our own brains’\, pushing back against unhelpful hidden predictions. The upshot should be a new appreciation of both the continuity and the diversity of human experience. \n\n\n\nAndy Clark is Professor of Cognitive Philosophy at the University of Sussex\, UK. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: AFTER HOURS
DESCRIPTION:Finally getting its due\, this underappreciated darkly comic masterpiece from director Martin Scorsese (Mean Streets\, Taxi Driver\, Raging Bull\, Goodfellas\, Casino\, The Departed\, The Wolf Of Wall Street\, Killers of The Flower Moon) hits the big screen in a stellar new 4K restoration. Here Scorsese poses the question\, ‘What if the awful date you thought would never end… didn’t end?’ \n\n\n\nWhen Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) has a chance encounter with a mysterious woman (Rosanna Arquette) in a coffee shop he is unwittingly dragged into a bizarre late night adventure in the seemingly inescapable bohemian enclave of 1980s SoHo\, taking in everything from an intimidating underground N.Y. Punk club (on Mohawk night)\, through to a surreal visit to an artist’s residence to collect a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight. Featuring a great cast including Teri Garr (Close Encounters)\, Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek)\, and even Cheech & Chong. This Kafkaesque cult classic is a seriously overlooked slice of comedic brilliance from perhaps the world’s greatest living director. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 97 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Brighton Cafe Scientifique: Identification of a rare inherited condition
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.15pm\n\n\n\nSPEAKER: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT \nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr Jo Murray is a geneticist who runs a lab at the Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex. This is a research centre investigating the responses of cells to DNA damage and the relationship to cancer and other aspects of human disease. She is interested in how cells deal with problems that occur during replication\, the copying of the DNA\, and the consequences of mis-regulation for genome instability and cancer. Her lab focuses on the Smc5/6 complex and how this coordinates the recovery of replication with repair of DNA damage. \n\n\n\nWhen two baby girls in a Dutch family died suddenly of lung failure paediatricians suspected a genetic cause. This led to an international collaboration between clinicians\, geneticists and other discovery scientists. Together\, we identified the defective gene and predicted it would lead to misfunctioning of the SMC5/6 complex. This is a group of proteins required for accurate copying and repair of our DNA. My lab has a long-term interest in SMC5/6 and we were able to build a picture of what is happening in the patients’ cells.

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
DESCRIPTION:Taking centre stage for our 2024 alternative Valentine’s special is the deliciously dark comedy cult classic about a romance between two simple flower shop assistants\, Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis)\, and Audrey (Ellen Greene)\, who are both helped and hindered by Seymour’s accidental discovery of a sentient alien plant that feeds on human blood (of course). What at first promises to be the saviour of their run down Skid Row\, N.Y. flower shop\, eventually threatens to not only de-rail the couple’s budding romance but become an unstoppable malevolent force. \n\n\n\nFrom the legendary Frank Oz\, Little Shop of Horrors fizzes with life and oozes class\, comedy and menace. With a cast of top flight talent\, it is undoubtedly one of the funniest\, sharpest\, most outrageously brilliant films of the 80s\, and the musical for people who don’t like musicals. Join us for this special screening of the film’s decidedly more ‘romantic’ theatrical cut for maximum Valentine’s day enjoyment. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.10pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.40pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 94 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 12 (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: A Cluttered and Noisy Sky
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Robert Massey | Royal Astronomical Society \n\n\n\n65 years ago the Soviet Union placed the first satellite in space. There are now around 5\,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO)\, the region up to 2\,000 km above the ground\, and their deployment is accelerating. 2019 saw the launch of Starlink\, a satellite constellation built and launched by SpaceX\, a system that on its own could soon have more than 30\,000 spacecraft deployed. With other operators we could soon see up to 300\,000 satellites in LEO by the end of this decade. \n\n\n\nThis is nothing less than a step change in our use of space. And like most paradigm shifts\, it will have significant consequences. A key example is how it will affect the science of astronomy and our view of the sky. Some estimates suggest that as many as 1 in 10 ‘stars’ visible could be satellites\, and professional and amateur astronomers alike now face significant challenges to our work. As a result our community has mobilised\, working at a national\, international and global level to tackle a complex problem\, and to try to find a balance between the positive results of boosting communications and the impact on the space environment. \n\n\n\nRobert will set out the problem\, what it means for scientists and the wider public\, and what we can do about it. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: BLOW OUT
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.00pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 108 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of a major BFI nationwide celebration\, ‘Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger\,’ we are excited to present this special screening of Brian DePalma’s 1981 classic ‘Blow Out’ programmed in response to Powell’s Peeping Tom. \n\n\n\nEven in a career that encompasses such classics as Carrie\, Dressed to Kill\, Scarface\, The Untouchables\, Carlito’s Way and many more\, Blow Out is a stand out piece of DePalma brilliance as well as the best film of John Travolta’s career. \n\n\n\nCentred on movie sound-effects man Jack (Travolta) who inadvertently captures the sound of a murder\, we (and Jack) are then drawn into one of the most easily watchable but intricately plotted thrillers of all time as he attempts to piece together what happened against a backdrop of personal paranoia\, political intrigue alongside possible eyewitness Sally (Nancy Allen). \n\n\n\nBrimming with multi-layered references to cinema’s past\, as well as being stacked with DePalma’s own endlessly inventive cinematic style\, Blow Out is perhaps the finest example of murder seen through the prism of filmmaking\, as well as just being one of the most raucously satisfying thrillers ever made. A brilliantly shot big screen experience that breaks the very idea of cinema down into it’s constituent parts only to piece it back together again to create of the most entertaining and witty movies of it’s type from any era. When coupled with our special visual mix-tape introduction (and companion piece film on Nov. 1st)\, it’s a can’t miss event. \n\n\n\nProgrammed as part of Brighton’s Powell and Pressburger: Dual Delights Season\, we have matched it with a very special companion piece in Michael Powell’s ‘Peeping Tom’ ‘screening Weds. Nov. 1th. Details HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
DESCRIPTION:With Barbie having earned more than a billion dollars at the global box office becoming the 12th highest earning film of all time (topping even Marvel’s The Avengers) prepare yourself for the oncoming endless onslaught of Mattel movies with this warning from history. \n\n\n\nWitness a fabulously wooden but ripplingly muscled Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) don his small underpants and wield an oversized sword as galactic savior He-Man\, battling The evil Skeletor (an outrageously tongue-in-cheek Frank Langella). He-Man must (like Barbie) travel to the real world of earth to right imbalances of the universe with pals ‘Man-At-Arms’\, Teela and Gwildor\, inventor of the all important Cosmic Key (obviously)\, to team up with 1980s teenagers Kevin and Julie (a young Courteney Cox). This shameless Star Wars rip-off is both an outrageously terrible film and a ton of hilarious Friday night fun. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 106 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: BROKER
DESCRIPTION:This poignant\, South Korean drama from Palme d’Or winning Shoplifters director Hirokazu Kore-eda brings joy to the potentially dark subject of ‘baby boxes’\, a place where unwanted babies can be anonymously abandoned safely. \n\n\n\nParasite star Song Kang-ho teams with Gang Dong-won as a pair of ‘brokers’ who illegally attempt to sell these abandoned babies on the adoption black market. When young Mother Moon So-young (Lee Ji-eun) reconsiders her decision\, the trio set out on a road trip to look for new adoptive parents for her child\, whilst slowly becoming an unconventional misfit family in their own right\, all the while being trailed by police detective Soo-jin (Bae Doona – The Host). Warm and uplifting but never sentimental thanks to Kore-eda’s precise\, naturalistic\, tenderly melancholic storytelling style. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 129 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets
