SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT + Q&A with Samira Ahmed
DESCRIPTION: 4K REMASTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special screening of the 1964 Beatles classic A Hard Day’s Night\, followed by a Q&A with acclaimed journalist\, broadcaster\, and author Samira Ahmed\, whose BFI Film Classics book explores the film’s enduring legacy and cultural impact. \n\n\n\nSamira Ahmed is the host of the BBC’s flagship arts programme Front Row on Radio 4\, where she interviews leading film directors\, actors\, writers\, and creators from across the cultural world. She also presents Newswatch on the BBC News Channel. In 2020\, she was named Audio Presenter of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild. A lifelong Beatles fan\, Ahmed’s love for the film began in the late 1970s\, watching her older brother’s home-recorded Betamax copy until it wore out. Decades later\, the film once again became a source of inspiration spurring her on during her landmark 2020 legal victory against the BBC in a high-profile sex discrimination equal pay case. \n\n\n\nAlongside the screening and Q&A\, there will also be an opportunity to purchase copies of Samira’s fascinating book on the film and have them personally signed. Buy the General Admission + Book option at checkout to ensure your copy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE – Doors for this event open at 6.40pm in order that you can enjoy the beer garden prior to the screening. Please arrive before 7.30pm so that the Q&A can begin promptly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore going on to direct multiple Musketeer and Superman movies\, director Richard Lester created what would become not only a cornerstone of Beatles mythology\, but also one of the most influential musical films ever made. Widely credited with helping invent the modern music video (for which he would receive the first MTV Vanguard award at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984)\, A Hard Day’s Night remains a landmark of British cinema and pop culture. \n\n\n\nFrom its exhilarating opening moments\, with the Fab Four fleeing screaming fans through the streets of London\, the film never lets up. John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo race from chaos to comedy as they attempt to make it to a live television performance\, accompanied by Paul’s mischievous “very clean” grandfather\, played by Wilfrid Brambell (Steptoe and Son). \n\n\n\nThe Beatles’ wit\, irreverent Liverpudlian humour\, and extraordinary musical charisma are on full display throughout\, as the film blazed a trail directly setting the template for everything from The Monkees television series to Spice World Spice Girls feature film. Filmed only weeks after the Beatles’ legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show\, A Hard Day’s Night captures the group at the precise moment they transformed from pop sensation into global phenomenon. \n\n\n\n*No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.40pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 87 mins + discussion\n\n\n\nCERT: PG

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: STAND BY ME - outdoor screening
DESCRIPTION: 4K REMASTER –  40TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 6.45pm SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.45pm*\n\n\n\nLAST ADMISSION: 7\,45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 89 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn tribute to the late Rob Reiner\, we’re proud to present a special outdoor screening of one of the most beloved and enduring films of the 1980s\, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. \n\n\n\nSet in the fictional Oregon town of Castle Rock in the summer of 1959 (a location that would become synonymous with King’s work) Stand By Me follows four young friends who set out on a journey to find the body of a local teenager after hearing he has been accidentally killed. Along the way\, their late-summer adventure becomes a poignant exploration of friendship\, growing up\, and the fleeting nature of childhood. Lyrical\, funny and deeply moving\, the film beautifully captures the universal power of youthful bonds. The Times called it “one of the loveliest and most devastating films ever made about the loss of childhood”\, while Rolling Stone described it as “the rare movie that necessarily gets better with time.” \n\n\n\nFeaturing a remarkable young cast\, including Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation)\, River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho)\, Corey Feldman (Gremlins\, The Goonies)\, Jerry O’Connell (Jerry Maguire) and Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys)\, Stand By Me\, named after the iconic Ben E. King song\, is a masterclass in understated\, truthful storytelling. Warm\, nostalgic and quietly profound\, it remains as emotionally resonant today as it was four decades ago. \n\n\n\n*This event is a screening in the outdoor garden space at our usual venue of Wagner Hall\, please feel free to bring cushions or blankets to sit on but please no chairs or very large cushions etc. (Limited chair seats are available for those who may experience difficulty sitting on the floor of the garden\, these will be located to the rear of the garden so as not to obscure other patrons view. Please e-mail us at info@whitewallcinema.co.uk immediately after purchasing your tickets if you require one of these for mobility reasons so we can reserve you one for you. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6.45pm when the bar will be open and music from the era the film is set in (1959) will be playing in the garden\, the screening will then take place at sunset in the garden\, please do dress appropriately for post sunset viewing even though it is August. Last admission will be 7.45pm after which time the doors will be closed. The screening will go ahead regardless of weather; however if there is a significant risk of rain or disruptive winds the screening will happen inside for safety/comfort reasons. \n\n\n\nNo hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: SUMMER WITH MONIKA
DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR: Ingmar Bergman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 6.45pm SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 96 mins\n\n\n\nLANGUAGE: Swedish w/ English subtitles\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoasting a coveted 100% Rotten Tomatoes score\, Summer with Monika is perhaps the first truly great film of Ingmar Bergman’s long and storied career. Bergman would\, of course\, go on to create a body of work that ranks him among the greatest directors of all time\, alongside Kubrick\, Hitchcock and Kurosawa. But Summer with Monika marks the director’s first major turning point\, both on and off screen. \n\n\n\nIt tells the story of two young working-class Swedes who\, disillusioned with everyday life\, steal a boat and embark on an impulsive getaway\, spending an idyllic summer together on a small island. There they experience the first bloom of love and lust before reality comes crashing back into their lives with the arrival of autumn. \n\n\n\nBergman’s first work with his future frequent collaborator Harriet Andersson\, (she and the director would embark on an affair during production… and it shows) the film features a spectacular and now-iconic performance from Andersson as Monika\, embodying an earthy sensuality\, a knowing sexuality and a devilish impetuousness. Despite its apparent simplicity (the film is certainly among the most accessible of Bergman’s works)\, it displays remarkable maturity for the then 34-year-old director\, forming a bridge between his early films and the internationally renowned masterpieces that followed\, including The Seventh Seal\, Wild Strawberries\, Persona and Fanny and Alexander. \n\n\n\nA highly evocative film that captures both the nostalgia of a sensual dream-like summer romance as well as being groundbreakingly gritty in it’s portrayals of working class life\, Summer with Monika proved enormously influential\, serving as a template for both the future creations of The French New Wave and the British Kitchen Sink drama. A poignant portrait of young love\, infidelity and working-class malaise\, it is filled with sumptuous imagery and a youthful breeziness\, all deftly handled by a director beginning to fully grasp the power of his own steely-eyed cinematic vision. Don’t miss the chance to experience it on the big screen as we say farewell to our own summer\, and let the maestro cast his spell in this defining work of cinema that remains essential viewing for any film lover. \n\n\n\nNo hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue’s licence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info

He also sometimes works across disciplines and has worked on models of post-growth economics. \n\n\n\n\n7:00pm Doors open\, bar opens\n\n\n\n7:30pm Talk starts\n\n\n\n8:15pm approx Short break followed by Q+A\n\n\n\n9:00pm Event ends\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Adam explains two major insights that science provides about our place in the universe. \n\n\n\nThe first of these is ‘panpsychism’ – consciousness is a fundamental property of matter\, and we’re all in some sense part of the same being. After arguing for this\, there follows a discussion on where we’re at in understanding what is the fundamental physical substrate of consciousness\, via an accessible account of the much-misunderstood integrated information theory. The second insight is ‘eternalism’ – that past\, present and future exist equally. It is explained how this follows from Einstein’s theory of relativity. The talk concludes with a discussion on how these two insights can provide spiritual comfort\, with knock-on benefits for mental health and society. \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: Heartbreakers (1984)
DESCRIPTION:NEW 2K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*** PLEASE NOTE DOORS OPEN AT 7.30PM SO YOU CAN ENJOY OUR BEER GARDEN PRIOR TO THE SCREENING*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt Is Still 1985 Brighton’s legendary 80s party (every Saturday at Green Door Store) turns 18 this year. To celebrate the night ‘coming of age’ White Wall Cinema are collaborating with 1985 for a season of films called ‘Sex in the 80s’ which continues this September with forgotten 80s classic ‘Heartbreakers’.  \n\n\n\nVery obviously the key influence on Challengers (Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 ménage à trois tennis drama starring Zendaya\, Mike Faist\, and Josh O’Connor)\, this overlooked\, underseen\, tender and sexy buddy movie about two highly competitive male friends (on the racquetball court and off)\, both chronically unsuccessful in love\, is a true forgotten gem. Intelligent framing and lush\, sensual ’80s atmospherics blend with a raw\, confessional style to create something of a mini-masterpiece. \n\n\n\nBased on the personal experiences of director Bobby Roth\, Heartbreakers approaches its subject in the style of a European relationship drama while retaining all the textures of mid-’80s Los Angeles. It’s richly photographed by Michael Ballhaus\, a long time collaborator of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese\, and scored by pioneering electronic group Tangerine Dream (Sorcerer; Thief; Risky Business). \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 98 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.00pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: WHAT HAPPENED WAS
DESCRIPTION:NEW 4K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most remarkable independent American films of all time\, and the Winner of the Sundance Festival Jury Prize in 1994\, What Happened Was began life as a stage play by actor Tom Noonan\, perhaps best known for his extraordinary performance in the original Hannibal Lecter movie\, Michael Mann’s Manhunter. \n\n\n\nTaking place over the course of a single evening in a New York City apartment\, two work colleagues embark on perhaps the most awkward and revealing date in cinema history. As the pair navigate the social expectations and emotional strains of a first date\, something much more profound about modern loneliness is revealed in this starkly real\, darkly humorous\, and relentlessly probing film\, which asks: who are we really on the inside? \n\n\n\nAwkwardly mismatched timing\, casual misunderstandings\, and veiled dark confessions converge with expert direction and beautiful camerawork to create one of the most thrilling\, emotionally resonant\, and intriguing films in all of American cinema. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.10pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.40pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 91 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.10pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.40pm. SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: Tidal Universe
DESCRIPTION:Here in Brighton & Hove\, we are used to watching the tides rise and fall twice each day. But such tidal forces are active throughout our Universe\, with both creative and destructive results. \n\n\n\nGravity is well known as the force that binds the cosmos together\, yet it is the differences in gravity that lead to some of the most dramatic phenomena in the Universe. From ocean tides that gave rise to life on Earth (and possibly elsewhere in our solar system\, and beyond)\, to the destruction of stars by supermassive black holes and the evolution of entire galaxies\, this talk will present an overview of how tidal forces have shaped our Universe across a vast range of scales. \n\n\n\nDr Darren Baskill is a lecturer and outreach officer in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Sussex\, with over 30 years’ experience of professional and amateur astronomy\, and in organising and delivering science events for schools\, colleges\, and the public. He is an astrophysicist\, educator\, lecturer and photographer who specialises in communicating astronomy to the public\, giving talks and working with the media on all aspects of astronomy and astrophotography\, having appeared on BBC TV\, radio and news online on many occasions\, as well as frequently writing for the BBC Focus magazine. \n\n\n\nIf you sign up via meetup but can no longer attend\, please update your status to say that you are no longer attending so that someone on the waiting list gets a place. Please only come along if you’ve signed up\, as we’re limited on space so won’t be able to fit anyone else in. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring the event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically. Brighton Astro is inclusive and welcomes everybody. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: THE COLOR OF MONEY
DESCRIPTION: TOM CRUISE SEASON\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf we were gamblers\, our bet would be that this is the year Tom Cruise wins his first competitive Oscar. But why has it taken so long? It can’t be understated just how deep and broad Cruise’s prowess as a movie star is\, nor the exceptional quality of the creatives he has worked with. For our Tom Cruise season\, we take a look at three different maverick directors’ treatments of Maverick himself. \n\n\n\nThe first film in the season comes from master director Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver\, Raging Bull\, Goodfellas\, The Wolf of Wall Street\, Killers of the Flower Moon). Considered by many to be one of the most underrated films in the great man’s filmography\, The Color of Money is a revisiting of a character that Hollywood great Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid\, The Sting\, Cool Hand Luke\, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) played 25 years earlier in his career in the 1961 classic The Hustler. \n\n\n\nNot a direct sequel\, (and you don’t need to have seen The Hustler)\, the film brings back “Fast Eddie” Felson\, now a jaded pool pro who has sworn off the game entirely. Eddie stumbles upon a young\, highly talented but extremely cocky pool player\, Vincent (played by an electric Tom Cruise)\, and his partner\, played by the excellent Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (The Abyss)\, who was nominated for an Oscar here. Eddie takes the pair under his wing to teach them the tricks of the hustling trade\, but the uneasy trio soon starts to show cracks at the seams. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 119 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm. SUMMARY:Café Scientifique: Running on Empty:
DESCRIPTION:Blood Flow\, Energy and Dementia\n\n\n\nProfessor Catherine Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS 7PM | SPEAKER 7.30PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that we are entirely dependent on donations from those who attend our events. You can make a donation as you arrive or leave; we are happy to accept cash or card payments. All donations greatly appreciated! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease ensure you REGISTER prior to attending! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Hall is Professor of Neurovascular Stuff (Psychology) in the School of Psychology and Sussex Neuroscience at the University of Sussex\, and a Professorial Research Fellow at University College London in the British Heart Foundation and UK Dementia Research Institute’s Centre for Vascular Dementia Research. She researches how the brain’s blood vessels work\, what happens to brain cells when they don’t get enough blood\, and why some parts of the brain go wrong faster than others when they don’t. Her lab images blood vessels in the living brain to watch blood flow and energy use as they happen. \n\n\n\n\n7:00pm Doors open\, bar opens\n\n\n\n7:30pm Talk starts\n\n\n\n8:15pm approx Short break followed by Q+A\n\n\n\n9:00pm Event ends\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Prof. Hall takes us on a journey through the brain’s 400 miles of blood vessels. \n\n\n\nThinking really is hungry work: an adult brain is 2% of the body’s mass but burns around 20% of its energy at rest. It is also a remarkably efficient machine — it manages on roughly the power of a dim lightbulb\, where a supercomputer doing comparable work needs a small power station. Most of that energy goes on one job: pumping ions back across the membranes of nerve cells after they fire. \n\n\n\nProf. Hall explains how the brain keeps that demand matched to the oxygen arriving in its blood\, helped by the pericytes wrapped around its tiniest blood vessels— and what happens when the match fails. She then makes the case that this matters for dementia. The hippocampus\, one of the first regions damaged in Alzheimer’s disease\, seems to run closer to its energetic limits than the rest of the brain and copes badly when oxygen falls\, and risk factors for dementia stack up to squeeze its supply further. Worse\, the beta amyloid that accumulates in Alzheimer’s appears to lower brain oxygen itself\, raising the prospect of a vicious cycle. The talk closes on the question her lab is chasing now: if a failing energy supply helps start the disease\, could protecting blood flow help stop it? \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: YOUR MONSTER
DESCRIPTION:Spooky season kicks off with some fun at WWC this year\, with a film that is brave enough to ask the question: what if there WAS a monster hiding under your bed\, and what if he was kinda’ f***able? The debut feature from director Caroline Lindy\, Your Monster creates the sort of easy-going Millennial/Gen Z popcorn horror rom-com that pitches itself somewhere between Beauty & the Beast and Lena Dunham’s Girls. \n\n\n\nWhen musical theatre actress Laura Franco\, played by Scream franchise stalwart Melissa Barrera\, finds herself dealing with the triple blow of cancer recovery\, a split with her boyfriend and no job prospects\, she takes refuge in her mother’s New York townhouse. There\, she discovers that her long forgotten childhood monster in the closet is still in residence. Once she gets over the initial shock\, Laura finds strength in her new companion and finds a way back to the stage. \n\n\n\nMixing genres with ease\, Your Monster is an enjoyable comedy\, romance and horror (with a few musical elements) that provides a smart take on how rage intersects with femininity\, alongside its laughs and heartstring tugs. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 98 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: Secret Movie Club - DINING WITH THE DEVIL
DESCRIPTION:(MYSTERY MOVIE)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n|| What is secret movie club? || \n\n\n\nOur “Secret Movie Club” project takes a movie you most likely haven’t seen before (but will instantly love) and keeps the identity of the movie a secret\, only revealing which film you are watching when the opening credits roll. The aim is to provide you with a brilliant forgotten or overlooked gem from cinema’s past or present (or perhaps even a major\, but lesser screened cult classic). Every time we do these events we get such phenomenal feedback from you guys. It’s incredibly rewarding to have people say to us they had never even heard of the movie we screened for them\, but that it is now instantly among their favourites!  \n\n\n\n|| Dining With The Devil || \n\n\n\nFor this Halloween special we are showing something that couldn’t be described as a horror movie but rather a devilishly funny\, thought provoking hidden gem with a macabre sense of humour about meeting someone who could well turn out to be the most awful person you ever met. With its overlooked female director and cast featuring many a familiar face this film has only become more relevant since its initial release when it was criminally overlooked. Jet black humour\, moments to make you squirm and plenty of food for thought about the world in which we live in it comes highly recommended as some pre-Halloween fun that offers a both a few gory thrills as well as a dose of enjoyable satire. As ever the film will be kept a tantalising secret until the opening credits roll.   \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: Approx 90 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.30pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 8.00pm. There will usually be no admittance from 20 minutes after the films stated start time. No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: IMAGES
DESCRIPTION:This outlier in Robert Altman’s prolific career follows children’s author Cathryn who\, after receiving a series of unsettling phone calls at her London flat\, decides she needs some time away from the city. Her husband Hugh whisks her away to his remote cottage in the Irish countryside in the hope that she can return to working on her upcoming book. But the isolation seems only to heighten Cathryn’s sense of unease\, as the world around her begins to fragment and reality appears to shatter into a confusing series of hallucinations involving her former lovers. A relaxing weekend in the country it is not! \n\n\n\nPsychologically and cinematically haunting and complex\, this early-’70s puzzle-box movie is both chilling and fascinating. Daring\, engaging and uncommon in its remote countryside-set horrors\, Images is well worth experiencing on the big screen. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 101 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.15pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.45pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: DONNIE DARKO
DESCRIPTION: 25TH ANNIVERSARY | 4K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n** See Donnie Darko in conjunction with Richard Kelly’s follow up film Southland Tales which is screening in it’s notorious ‘Cannes Cut’ on December 2nd by getting discounted the Richard Kelly Double Ticket. For more on Southland Tales go HERE ** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s been 25 years since Richard Kelly’s directorial debut\, Donnie Darko\, opened in cinemas in the wake of 9/11\, finding itself in the wrong place at the wrong time\, only to steadily build a global following over the next decade and firmly cement its place as the key cult classic of its era. Still as potent as ever 25 years on\, the hypnotic\, poetic\, nostalgic and yet joyously fresh sensibility of this miracle of a film remains firmly intact. \n\n\n\nSet in the suburbs of Virginia in the late 1980s\, Donnie is an awkward and troubled teenager who survives a freak accident\, only to find himself having visions of a six-foot-tall bunny rabbit named Frank\, who informs him that the world will soon end. As Donnie tries to unravel the mystery\, a high-school bully\, time tunnels\, Halloween parties\, a mysterious elderly neighbour and a burgeoning friendship with fellow troubled teen Gretchen all complicate matters. \n\n\n\nThe first cult film of the 21st century\, Donnie Darko is a perfectly formed mini-masterpiece that allows itself to be funny\, sincere\, mind-bending\, compassionate\, melancholy\, ethereal and outrageously cool all at the same time. Set during the Halloween period\, the film’s eerie vibes provide the perfect viewing for this year’s final spooky special on Thursday\, October 29th. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.15pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 113 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 7.15pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.45pm. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: Southland Tales
DESCRIPTION:THE CANNES CUT | 2K RESTORATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n** See Southland Tales in conjunction with Richard Kelly’s debut film Donnie Darko which is screening on Thursday October 29th by getting the discounted Richard Kelly Double Ticket. For more on Donnie Darko go HERE ** \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Richard Kelly’s follow-up to his debut feature Donnie Darko is the entirely remarkable but largely misunderstood Southland Tales. A response to the post-9/11 world and its new absurd political realities\, this sprawling Los Angeles near-future dystopian black comedy thriller was screened at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival to a disastrous reception. In a panic\, the film was hastily re-edited\, losing much of its core\, and released to the public\, only to be promptly dismissed. \n\n\n\nThe story\, set in 2008\, sees the United States standing on the brink of social\, economic\, and environmental disaster\, in the midst of a Fourth of July heatwave weekend. Action movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) finds himself suffering from amnesia as his life intertwines with pornstar Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar)\, who is developing her own reality TV show tackling the big subjects of terrorism\, crime\, poverty\, and\, yes\, teen horniness. Added to this mix is LAPD officer Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott)\, whose identity seems to have been split in two. \n\n\n\nA rip-roaring hybrid of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick sensibilities\, with an almost hypnotic mix of grandeur\, etherealness\, and downright absurdist\, Republican Party-fuelled phantasmagoria. Miss the Cannes Cut at your peril. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.50pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 160 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).\n\n\n\n\n*Please note – doors open at 6.50pm\, Please try to allow extra time to get seated prior to the performance start time of 7.20pm. SUMMARY:Ladylike
DESCRIPTION:The Brighton based quartet – Georgia Butler (vocals\, guitar)\, Spencer Withey (vocals\, guitar\, synth)\, James Ely (drums)\, and Archie Sagers (six-string bass) serve their folk rare: raw and pastoral\, but with a side of textural\, atmospheric builds directly wired into the tensions of the modern world. It’s a formula that has gained them slots at Green Man; Left Of The Dial; The Great Escape; and Dot To Dot\, plus support slots with Ugly\, Mary in the Junkyard and Lime Garden. Early champions at radio and press include KEXP\, BBC 6 Music\, Apple 1\, Radio X\, DIY\, So Young\, and Rough Trade. \n\n\n\nThe band’s forthcoming debut EP was recorded with producer Ali Chant (Aldous Harding\, Perfume Genius\, PJ Harvey). It captures the quiet urgency that has always been Ladylike’s hallmark. Across four tracks\, they explore cycles renewal\, and the beauty of persistence\, finding poetry in English idioms and the banality of the mundane. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nUnder 16s must be accompanied by an adult.\n\n\n\nUnreserved seating.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed.
