SUMMARY:Brighton Astro: A Cluttered and Noisy Sky
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Robert Massey | Royal Astronomical Society \n\n\n\n65 years ago the Soviet Union placed the first satellite in space. There are now around 5\,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO)\, the region up to 2\,000 km above the ground\, and their deployment is accelerating. 2019 saw the launch of Starlink\, a satellite constellation built and launched by SpaceX\, a system that on its own could soon have more than 30\,000 spacecraft deployed. With other operators we could soon see up to 300\,000 satellites in LEO by the end of this decade. \n\n\n\nThis is nothing less than a step change in our use of space. And like most paradigm shifts\, it will have significant consequences. A key example is how it will affect the science of astronomy and our view of the sky. Some estimates suggest that as many as 1 in 10 ‘stars’ visible could be satellites\, and professional and amateur astronomers alike now face significant challenges to our work. As a result our community has mobilised\, working at a national\, international and global level to tackle a complex problem\, and to try to find a balance between the positive results of boosting communications and the impact on the space environment. \n\n\n\nRobert will set out the problem\, what it means for scientists and the wider public\, and what we can do about it. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.00pm\n\n\n\nLECTURE: 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend\n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but we would be grateful if those of you who are able to could donate a few pounds to help cover the cost of hiring this event space. We will have a card reader and a money box you can drop your donations in on the night. We also have a bank account you can donate to electronically.

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: BLOW OUT
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.00pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 108 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of a major BFI nationwide celebration\, ‘Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger\,’ we are excited to present this special screening of Brian DePalma’s 1981 classic ‘Blow Out’ programmed in response to Powell’s Peeping Tom. \n\n\n\nEven in a career that encompasses such classics as Carrie\, Dressed to Kill\, Scarface\, The Untouchables\, Carlito’s Way and many more\, Blow Out is a stand out piece of DePalma brilliance as well as the best film of John Travolta’s career. \n\n\n\nCentred on movie sound-effects man Jack (Travolta) who inadvertently captures the sound of a murder\, we (and Jack) are then drawn into one of the most easily watchable but intricately plotted thrillers of all time as he attempts to piece together what happened against a backdrop of personal paranoia\, political intrigue alongside possible eyewitness Sally (Nancy Allen). \n\n\n\nBrimming with multi-layered references to cinema’s past\, as well as being stacked with DePalma’s own endlessly inventive cinematic style\, Blow Out is perhaps the finest example of murder seen through the prism of filmmaking\, as well as just being one of the most raucously satisfying thrillers ever made. A brilliantly shot big screen experience that breaks the very idea of cinema down into it’s constituent parts only to piece it back together again to create of the most entertaining and witty movies of it’s type from any era. When coupled with our special visual mix-tape introduction (and companion piece film on Nov. 1st)\, it’s a can’t miss event. \n\n\n\nProgrammed as part of Brighton’s Powell and Pressburger: Dual Delights Season\, we have matched it with a very special companion piece in Michael Powell’s ‘Peeping Tom’ ‘screening Weds. Nov. 1th. Details HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
DESCRIPTION:With Barbie having earned more than a billion dollars at the global box office becoming the 12th highest earning film of all time (topping even Marvel’s The Avengers) prepare yourself for the oncoming endless onslaught of Mattel movies with this warning from history. \n\n\n\nWitness a fabulously wooden but ripplingly muscled Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) don his small underpants and wield an oversized sword as galactic savior He-Man\, battling The evil Skeletor (an outrageously tongue-in-cheek Frank Langella). He-Man must (like Barbie) travel to the real world of earth to right imbalances of the universe with pals ‘Man-At-Arms’\, Teela and Gwildor\, inventor of the all important Cosmic Key (obviously)\, to team up with 1980s teenagers Kevin and Julie (a young Courteney Cox). This shameless Star Wars rip-off is both an outrageously terrible film and a ton of hilarious Friday night fun. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 106 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: BROKER
DESCRIPTION:This poignant\, South Korean drama from Palme d’Or winning Shoplifters director Hirokazu Kore-eda brings joy to the potentially dark subject of ‘baby boxes’\, a place where unwanted babies can be anonymously abandoned safely. \n\n\n\nParasite star Song Kang-ho teams with Gang Dong-won as a pair of ‘brokers’ who illegally attempt to sell these abandoned babies on the adoption black market. When young Mother Moon So-young (Lee Ji-eun) reconsiders her decision\, the trio set out on a road trip to look for new adoptive parents for her child\, whilst slowly becoming an unconventional misfit family in their own right\, all the while being trailed by police detective Soo-jin (Bae Doona – The Host). Warm and uplifting but never sentimental thanks to Kore-eda’s precise\, naturalistic\, tenderly melancholic storytelling style. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 129 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME MARGARET
DESCRIPTION:Edge of Seventeen director Kelly Fremon Craig returns to coming-of-age dramedy with this adaptation of the 1970s Judy Blume novel. \n\n\n\nBeloved for generations by women and girls for its refreshing frankness about early-adolescent anxieties\, and its bewildering whirlwind of menstruation\, brassieres and boys. \n\n\n\nThis wonderfully light yet moving story of growing pains and family complexities is deftly and humorously executed by a great cast including Rachel McAdams\, Benny Safdie\, and Kathy Bates\, fronted by the brilliantly talented Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret. \n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 106 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

Not only that\, but there will be a DJ set of tunes stolen straight from the Dude’s 8-Track player in his 1973 Ford Gran Torino (lots of Creedence but strictly no Eagles). Lebowski style fancy dress is highly encouraged as there will be a prize for the best costume\, aside from Dudes in dressing gowns\, Walters\, Jesus’s\, Maudes and more are welcomed\, as well as obscure outfits\, or even dressing as inanimate objects (severed toe anyone?). But rest assured\, your normal clothes are welcome too. SUMMARY:An evening with Dolly Alderton
DESCRIPTION:DOORS – 6.15pm\n\n\n\nEVENT – 7.00pm\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nPlease note: book and ticket option includes a copy of Good Material (RRP £18.99) available for collection on the night. \n\n\n\n\n\nWaterstones are thrilled to host an evening with the bestselling and beloved author of Ghosts\, Dear Dolly and Everything I know About Love. Dolly Alderton joins us to celebrate and discuss the publication of her new novel\, Good Material– a deliciously witty and wise novel about love\, relationships\, and heartbreak that only Dolly Alderton could write. \n\n\n\nEvery relationship has one beginning. \n\n\n\nThis one has two endings. \n\n\n\nAndy loves Jen. Jen loved Andy. \n\n\n\nAnd he can’t work out why she stopped. \n\n\n\nNow he is. . . \n\n\n\n1. Without a home \n\n\n\n2. Waiting for his stand-up career to take off \n\n\n\n3. Wondering why everyone else around him seems to have grown up while he wasn’t looking \n\n\n\nSet adrift on the sea of heartbreak at a time when everything he thought he knew about women\, and flat-sharing\, and his friendships has transformed beyond recognition\, Andy clings to the idea of solving the puzzle of their broken relationship. Because if he can find the answer to that\, then maybe Jen can find her way back to him. \n\n\n\nAndy still has a lot to learn\, not least his ex-girlfriend’s side of the story. \n\n\n\nDolly Alderton is an award-winning author\, screenwriter and journalist based in London. She is a columnist for The Sunday Times Style and has also written for GQ\, Red\, Marie Claire and Grazia. She is the former co-host and co-creator of the podcast The High Low. Her first book Everything I Know About Love became a top five Sunday Times bestseller in its first week of publication\, won a National Book Award (UK) for Autobiography of the Year and was made into a BBC One TV Series. Ghosts\, her first novel was published by Fig Tree in 2020. Dear Dolly\, a collection of her agony aunt columns from the Sunday Times Style magazine\, was also a Sunday Times bestseller.

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: PEEPING TOM
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.00pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 101 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of a major BFI nationwide celebration\, ‘Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger\,’ we are excited to present this special screening of the infamous 1960 classic psychological horror ‘Peeping Tom’. \n\n\n\nThe film’s director\, Michael Powell\, best known for his collaborations with directing partner Emeric Pressburger (the duo creating legendary works such as The Red Shoes\, A Matter Of Life & Death\, Black Narcissus\, The Tales of Hoffman and more)\, seemingly ended his own career when he struck out on his own to create this controversial classic. \n\n\n\nReleased the same year as Hitchcock’s Psycho\, Peeping Tom is an equally brilliant piece of filmmaking that failed at the box office due to revulsion of a shocked British establishment press. This twisted tale of a psychopathic serial killer cameraman who films his victims as he murders them is now widely considered to be a highly influential masterpiece that has subsequently been championed by the likes of master director Martin Scorsese and feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey. \n\n\n\nNot only a pre-cursor to the modern slasher movie\, Peeping Tom is also a psychologically sharp thriller that asks difficult and fascinating questions about cinema as a form of voyeurism. Undoubtedly one of the best British movies ever made it is a must see big screen experience when coupled with our special visual mix-tape introduction (and our companion piece film on Nov. 29th). \n\n\n\nProgrammed as part of Brighton’s Powell and Pressburger: Dual Delights Season\, we have matched it with very a special companion piece in Brian DePalma’s ‘Blow Out’\, screening Weds. Nov. 29th. Details HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema: POLTERGEIST
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.10pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.40pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 114 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 15\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis horror classic is what you get when you combine the twin talents of Producer Steven Spielberg (Jaws\, E.T.\, Jurassic Park) with Director Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Hooper invades the classic Spielbergian suburban family home with a supernatural presence that first arrives (in iconic fashion) via the TV set\, only for things to dramatically escalate as the house turns on its inhabitants in spectacular fashion\, forcing the family to call in a team of parapsychologists. One of the key pop culture movies of the ‘80s\, Poltergeist is a brilliant roller coaster ride of of eye catching special effects and creepy goings on. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 132 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 18\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe final entry in our year long exploration of early ‘90s black cinema sees Spike Lee tackling societal attitudes when Black architect ‘Flipper’ (Wesley Snipes at the peak of his powers) begins dating Italian-American secretary Angie (an excellent Annabella Sciorra). Surrounded by an outstanding supporting cast including Ossie Davis\, Ruby Dee\, Samuel L. Jackson\, John Turturro\, Frank Vincent\, Halle Berry (in her film debut)\, Tim Robbins\, Brad Dourif\, Queen Latifah\, Michael Imperioli\, and Anthony Quinn. DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 6.45pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.45pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 115 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: 12 (Under 15s must be accompanied by an adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLegendary French film director Francois Truffaut called it ‘the best Film Noir I have ever seen’. Jules Dassin’s Rififi is a twisting tale of four robbers who plan one last jewellry heist in 1950’s Paris. \n\n\n\nGetting out of prison after a five year stretch\, exhausted master thief Tony le Stéphanois initially turns down a heist job offered by friends. However\, once he discovers his girlfriend is now dating a rival gangster\, Tony sets about planning his next job. Meticulously considering every detail\, he fails to account for one thing\, human weakness. \n\n\n\nInfluencing everything from Reservoir Dogs to Oceans Eleven\, not only did Rififi invent the modern heist movie\, it still stands as perhaps the greatest example of the genre ever constructed. As well as its dazzlingly breathless heist sequence\, Dassin’s film is notable for its humanist qualities that extend well beyond the action\, as the film commits to fully realising the fate of its characters and the wages of sin. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

Chosen to be part of a year-long mission to the international space station\, Sarah (Eva Green) must tackle the challenges of both mission prep and the strain of leaving behind her eight-year-old daughter Stella. \n\n\n\nA completely unique take on the Sci-Fi genre\, Proxima is a deeply personal drama that cuts to the heart of the dilemma of family life for women who pursue elite occupations. SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema presents: DAYS OF HEAVEN
DESCRIPTION:DOORS: 7.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 8.30pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 94 mins\n\n\n\nCERT: PG (Under 15s Must Be Accompanied by an Adult)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most aesthetically attuned directors of all time\, Terrence Malick’s ability to conjure up breath taking images on screen is virtually unparalleled. Days of Heaven is one of only two movies Malick made in the ‘70s (prior to a near 20 year absence as a director) and is an undoubted masterpiece of ethereal atmospherics. \n\n\n\nThis tale of a young couple who pretend to be siblings in order to secure work and fortune at the home of a rich landowner in the Texas Panhandle of 1916\, produces both achingly poetic images\, as well as a beautifully simple but philosophically rich story.  \n\n\n\nOne of the most critically acclaimed films of all time\, Days of Heaven is widely recognised as the absolute pinnacle of 70s American cinema. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:White Wall Cinema presents: Sofia Coppola's SOMEWHERE
DESCRIPTION:+PRE FILM INTERVIEW WITH SPECIAL GUEST – AUTHOR HANNAH STRONG\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOORS: 6.30pm*\n\n\n\nSTART TIME: 7.20pm*\n\n\n\nRUN TIME: 98 mins + 40 mins discussion\n\n\n\nCERT: 15 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special screening of Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere\, plus a pre-film discussion with Little White Lies Associate Editor and author of ‘Sofia Coppola Forever Young’\, Hannah Strong. \n\n\n\nHannah’s book explores the ‘tonally diverse\, meticulously crafted\, and unapologetically hyperfeminine aesthetic’ of the great Sofia Coppola\, director of several modern classics including The Virgin Suicides\, Marie Antoinette\, The Beguiled and more. Something of a companion piece to Coppola’s outstanding Academy Award winning film Lost In Translation\, Somewhere (itself the winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival) once again explores the ennui of a famous temporary hotel resident detached from everyday life and family. \n\n\n\nStephen Dorff puts in a career best performance in this remarkably touching and intimate story of a jaded Hollywood actor who\, whilst spending time recuperating and giving in to the various vices afforded a star at Beverly Hills famed Chateau Marmont hotel\, is suddenly confronted by a visit from his 11 year old daughter (Elle Fanning). As the pair navigate their somewhat uncertain father daughter relationship\, a story of true tenderness emerges as the listless and disinterested movie star reassess his life outlook. \n\n\n\nUndoubtedly semi-autobiographical\, Somewhere is a hypnotic\, funny\, tender\, understated and meditative piece of cinema that taps into a deep well of personal emotion for the director all powered by Coppola’s trademark beautiful cinematography and glistening pop culture soundtrack. \n\n\n\nAs well as the on-stage discussion and film screening\, there will be a chance to purchase (and have signed) one of Hannah’s beautiful and fascinating books. \n\n\n\nTickets
