White Wall Cinema Presents – The Outsiders | Rumblefish DOUBLE BILL

27th February 2022 @ 6:00 pm 10:00 pm

DOUBLE BILL PRESENTATION:

THE OUTSIDERS & RUMBLEFISH

Credited as the inventor of the YA genre, Susan Eloise Hinton’s (better known by her pen name S.E. Hinton) two classic novels received stunning back to back film adaptations from the great Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Cotton Club) with a cast of then largely unknown (mostly teenage) actors that included a future who’s who of Hollywood including Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emelio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke,  Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne and more. These two back to back Coppola creations, whilst being beautifully dissimilar still share a thematic convergence through Hinton’s two tales of disaffected Oklahoman teenagers.

The Outsiders bathed in its golden light of a nostalgic melodrama (seen in here in a stunning brand new 4K restoration in its ‘Complete Novel’ cut) and Rumble Fish’s fatalistic melding of film noir, the French new wave, and German expressionism are two of the most visually arresting and heartfelt productions in all of cinema. The Outsiders, ‘The Complete Novel’ cut boasts a newly added collection of excellent era appropriate songs sound tracking its socio-economic gang conflicts of the working-class “Greasers” and the upper-class “Socs”. Rumble Fish features a fittingly stylised score by The Police’s Stewart Copeland charting Rusty James’s battle to live up to his brothers (dubious) ‘Motorcycle Boy’ reputation. Adding to this is Coppola’s outstanding direction and cast both captured by Stephen H. Burum’s remarkable cinematography, making these two films an unforgettable and essential cinematic double bill.
