White Wall Cinema Presents: LA STRADA

Perhaps the first outright masterpiece by Italian great Federico Fellini who would later create such legendary cinematic experiences as La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Satyricon, Roma, and Amarcord, this 1954 screen classic stars the director’s wife and collaborator Giulietta Masina as Gelsomina, as a young care-free girl who is sold by her impoverished mother to a travelling showman. A poetic vision of life as a bittersweet carnival, it sees her forced out into a life of roadside shows and village square festivals across the Italian countryside, where she discovers the simple beauty of performance and endures the cruelty of her travelling companion, the brutish strongman Zampano. The first ever foreign language film Oscar winner it remains one of cinema’s most exquisitely moving visions of humanity struggling to survive in the face of life’s cruelties.
