Following his 1987 hit The Lost Boys, Joel Schumacher returned to undead territory in 1990, once again teaming with Kiefer Sutherland (and adding in further stellar cast including Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon) for another cult classic in Flatliners. A tale of a gang of Chicago medical students who experiment with the line between life and death using resuscitation, which results in paranormal consequences from their trespassing into the afterlife. Highly stylised with a real sense of drama and fun, Shumacher’s vibrant colour scheme and effective atmospherics also allows for some pop culture philosophising as he creates a piece of neo-noir gothic akin to a modern take on Frankenstein.
